Suicide Prevention Awareness & Emotional Health / Ewa Facility Update & Donations / YO! Center Renovation / My Story

September
is National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month.
Each year, close to 43,000 Americans die by suicide.

It was the most common cause of fatal injuries for Hawaii residents from 2010-2014, according to the State Department of Health. One person dies by suicide in Hawaii every two days. Pledge to #stopsuicide being there when someone needs to talk. A 24-hour Oahu hotline is available at 832-3100; neighbor islands may call toll free at 1-800-753-6879. Through our crisis and counseling services, we help youth in urgent times of need.

Emotional health is important. Let's take a closer look this month at what helps us be emotionally healthy.
Check out the "7 Habits of Highly Emotionally Healthy People."
Donations Support New Hale Kipa Facility
Through the generous support of donors under our multi-year capital campaign, we have raised more than
$6 million in funds and committed support to build our $10.5 million complex in Ewa that will serve as our new headquarters. Island Insurance Foundation (pictured) and ABC Stores recently donated funds toward the state-of-the-art facility. This location will consolidate our operations to improve service quality.
Volunteers Renovate Homeless Outreach Center
Our Youth Outreach (YO!) Center in Waikiki recently received a $50,000 renovation, thanks to Home Aid Hawaii and other Hawaii businesses. Upgrades were made to the kitchen, computer lab and health clinic, as well as the installation of new lockers and a medical exam table. The drop-in center serves more than 500 youth and young adults in need each year.

My Story: Pi'ilani Alapai-Lopez
Pi'ilani left Kauai when she was 13 years old after challenges
in her personal life led to lapses in her school attendance. She was raised for most of her childhood on the beach, finding a home on Oahu with Hale Kipa for the past 5 years. Through ongoing support with a Hale Kipa therapist and case worker, she is now pursuing her education and career goals on Oahu. (More)
