Keanu is a BEAST. Blessed with an amazing family and support system, Anu is a naturally very well-rounded athlete. With few glaring weaknesses, we typically work to improve on ALL the major aspects of an athlete’s profile including mobility, flexibility, coordination, power, strength and endurance. At times I will select an advanced skill that relates to surfing to challenge him with. An example would be plyometric hurdle progressions, which we use with all our athletes at NAKOA to improve lower body power, rotational body control and overall proprioception (knowing where you are in space). The intention here is to BOTH improve on a movement ability that can apply to his sport AND boost his confidence through mastery of drills that at first frustrated him.

The point of this narrative is to illustrate the importance of an athlete’s self esteem and mindset during their competition season. All surfers know the feeling of being landlocked due to sickness, injury, or work duties, taking its toll on cardiovascular fitness, surfing performance, and mental state. It is important at any skill level to maintain full body health to reduce your risk of injury while trying to perform your best in the water. The most common injuries amongst surfers are shoulder pathologies. Surfing requires repetitive shoulder rotation which can lead to common overuse injuries like shoulder impingement syndrome, tendonitis, rotator cuff tears, or labral pathology. It is important as a surfer to establish efficient shoulder mechanics to increase your time in the water, increase paddle power, and ultimately avoid injury.

Keanu is known for his power surfing and precision backside surfing. "Anu" recently won the 2016 Quiksilver Pro France to earn his first Championship Tour victory. Anu's coach, Ryan Gallop, says I've never seen a more dedicated, determined, and hard working athlete, not to mention the guy has more aloha in his pinky finger than most people have in their whole body. We're proud to have Keanu as part of our NAKOA family.
