See our AWSOM Vietnamese Experience

Bill and Simone visited Vietnam and then Singapore during the holidays.
We took part in the volunteer program called the AWSOM Project (Australian Water Safety on Mekong) followed by the International Swim Schools Association Conference.

In Vietnam we learned about the incredible charity not only teaching children swimming and water safety but also educating local teachers so that they can continue the swimming lessons throughout the year.

We met with the team and visited a remote school on an island where a 'pop up' style pool was installed for the week. The beautiful children were so excited and thankful for the experience and loved learning lifesaving skills and CPR. The drowning statistics for the country are absolutely devastating, equating to about 30 people a day. Generally it is more than one child or more than one member of a family who drown as they jump in to save one another and can't swim themselves. A major focus of the program is about prevention and also other rescue techniques. The lesson - do not jump in to save someone.
We visited an orphanage and School for deaf children. It was so humbling to meet them and receive their handmade gifts as a thank you. We as the International Swim Schools Association made a 200kg rice donation to them. We purchased some beautiful bath mats made by the nuns and students at the school which we will put in the Swim School.
We finished the tour with a closing ceremony full of dancing and celebrations by the students and the local government. You will see a very surprised Simone receiving a birthday cake (beautifully decorated with a photo also) and a Happy Birthday sung by hundreds of international delegates, students and government officials!!
We will be making personal and business donations to the charity. If you would like to contribute - $60 ensures that one child is taught swimming lessons for the year, you can see their wonderful work and also make a donation at
