Goosestock Wrap Up

By Leslie Tobin

This year was another rainy one for our annual reunion, but that didn’t stop us! We had a great time in the Mess Hall, enjoying a nice fire and lots of great company. Adam VanDeMark served as our Camp Director for the weekend and did a great job! This year was an “Old-Fashion Goosestock” but the theme was a birthday party, as we helped Camp Kenan celebrate the big 9-0! We had planned activity periods, which included the ropes course, craft lodge, hockey, and basketball, but there was no set schedule, so everyone could choose to do whatever they wanted. We also had a basket raffle, which included some great baskets donated by several different individuals and local companies. We even had a Cal Ripken Jr. autographed baseball! The $500 drawing was very popular and the lucky winner of the cash prize was Lora VanDeMark. Overall, it was a success and of course we ended the evenings with a fire and stories from TOGG. Goose also led a service in the Michael Tobin Memorial on Sunday morning.

Over all, we brought in over $3000, thanks to all your donations! We would not have been able to have such a great weekend without the help of so many of you and so many local business. A huge thank you goes to Wegman's, Olive Garden, Molinaro's, the Buffalo Bills, LaFarge, Lock 34, the Masonic Lodge, Pizza Wings and Things, Ross Rentals, Shimschack’s, Becker Farms, David Luke for getting that signed baseball, the current staff of Camp Kenan for their time and energy, and Luke Kantor for helping us throw such a great party! Another big thank you goes to all those individuals that donated baskets for the raffle. We could not have done it without you!

The date for Goosestock 2015 is still to be determined, but we will get you those details as soon as we can so you can start planning your last summer weekend trip and come hang out with us! Without your support, we could not have sent 21 kids to camp this summer, and we are well on our way to helping another 20 kids create unforgettable memories this upcoming year! Thank you.

Letter from the President

By Elizabeth Millen

Well, young folks, old folks and everybody else, I couldn't stay away for long! I was on the Board of the Friends of Camp Kenan from September 2010- September 2013. I served as the Secretary 2010-2012 ,and was the person who developed the idea for this way of communication we call The Torch. A little newsletter from the Friends of Camp Kenan meant to keep you connected and informed to all that is happening within this amazing alumni organization. The Torch will keep you up to date about what happened at Goosestock, and who the local businesses were that supported this event. We’ll keep you up to date on how much we raised for the Friends of Camp Kenan-Gilbert J. Mosher Scholarship Fund. When you want to know about the next winter Friends gathering or what to expect at the next Goosestock, the Torch is the place to find that information. In the years past we had shared stories from others about adventures with The Old Gray Goose that we lovingly referred to as TOGG Tales; we had letters from previous staff and CK Camp Directors that shared their memories of good times at CK. All good and interesting stuff that we look forward to continue sharing for years to come!
As the new President, the first thing I would like to do is thank Mark Natemeier for his dedication to his role as President over the past four years. Your ideas, your energy and your love of all things Camp Kenan has not gone unnoticed and will not be forgotten. Your leadership was instrumental in making this organization officially non-profit and your love of CK is seen and felt at the remodel of the Michael Tobin Memorial Chapel. Thanks to you, your wife Jess, and your sweet kids for the time you gave and continue to give to the Friends of Camp Kenan. Thank you for nominating me to fill the ginormous shoes you are passing over as President. I will do my very best in this role and those shoes. I may flop around in them a little in the beginning, but I can promise you that my feet will grow with time and soon they will be a perfect fit.
My personal goal as President will be to keep you, those reading this newsletter, connected to this place so many of us refer to as "home." Camp Kenan. My hope is that you find the time to come back to Goosestock at Camp Kenan in 2015 for one, two or three days in September and reconnect face to face with friends and memories from the years you worked on staff. I hope that if you haven't had a chance to come back yet, that 2015 will be your year. I can't tell you how fun it is to be there now, as a mom and have the chance to share even the tiniest bit of the CK experience with my husband Andy and our three kids, Cecilia, Josephine & Elliott. It's already a part of their lives and hearts and I hope that grows. Through the decades, no matter what's changed at Camp Kenan, it’s fundamentally still the same lovely, welcoming, unique place with that long winding driveway leading to the cabin line. You have Friends waiting for you in the Mess Hall, at “Home.”
