Your old friend Waldo is hiding in plain sight all over downtown Northfield! Can you spot him?

Dear Reader,

Summer is in full swing and Northfield is in high form, with Thursday night band concerts on the square, overflowing flower baskets dotting Division Street, the Riverwalk Market on Saturday mornings, and locals and visitors alike strolling leisurely from ice cream to coffee to book browsing every day of the week. We've been having a blast helping families find the best road-trip entertainment (an audiobook or a new game, perhaps?) and sharing our favorite summer reads. We'll even be open today, July 4th, from 10 am to 3 pm so we can keep doing more of the same!

Then, from July 5th through 7th, we'll be joining with bookstores across the country in a campaign to support families seeking refuge and asylum at our southern border, a cause we believe represents the best of our American values. At Content, we're participating by donating 10% of all our proceeds from in-store and online sales to RAICES (Refugee and Immigrant Center for Education and Legal Services), one of the most effective organizations giving legal aid to immigrants detained at the U.S. border. They are working to advocate for and represent immigrants and refugees through the American legal system, and have a program to specifically provide representation to unaccompanied children coming over the border.

If you'd like to do some weekend shopping and you're looking for the perfect paperback to pop in your bag, look no further than our Summer Reading display in the front of the shop, where you'll get 10% off any one or two selected titles (and a very fine selection it is, if we may say so ourselves), and 15% off any three.

We're also kicking off a fun summer scavenger hunt in Northfield this week, with Waldo popping up throughout the downtown shops, so read on to find out how to play, and bring the kids downtown this weekend to hunt for the guy in the stripey shirt!

Where's Waldo in Northfield? A summer scavenger hunt.

Now through August 6th, with a Waldo Party on August 7th @ 4 pm

Where’s Waldo? In Northfield, of course! The iconic children’s book character in the red-and-white-striped shirt and black-rimmed specs is visiting twenty-four local businesses throughout our community this July. Find Waldo Local is a great summer vacation activity and a wonderful way to support downtown Northfield and the Shop Local movement, including Hogan Brothers, Cake Walk, Goodbye Blue Monday, Paper Petalum, our new neighbor Little Joy, and many more.

Anyone who wishes to participate can pick up a “Find Waldo Local in Northfield” passport, which contains the names of all the participating sites, and get their passport stamped or signed for each Waldo they spot. And to make things a little more challenging, Waldo’s nemesis, Odlaw, will also be hiding in Content Books and Kids’Content. Collecting 10 signatures at participating businesses earns you a button and a coupon at Content. Collecting store stamps or signatures at twenty or more businesses will also entitle diligent seekers entry into a grand-prize drawing on July 31, with the top prize being a copy of Where’s Waldo? Destination: Everywhere!, a tribute to Waldo’s many decades of wandering. Pick up your passport and starting searching for Waldo today!

"Joy Riggs is a wonderful writer whose humor, grace, and careful research will make any reader care deeply about this family. This book illustrates what each of us can learn about ourselves by understanding those who came before us. It’s also a testament to the power of music to create community, connect people to one another, and 'make time and place dissolve.'"

Pre-order your copy of Colson Whitehead's new novel, The Nickel Boys

Colson Whitehead's last novel, The Underground Railroad, not only won a Pulitzer Prize and a National Book Award, it was also a huge customer favorite at Content. That's why we think you'll be excited to reserve your copies of Whitehead's newest novel, Nickel Boys, when it's released on July 16th. When you do so at Content, you'll get a signed first edition copy of the book (while supplies last), and an exclusive bookmark to match. Reserve online or in the shop today.

In this bravura follow-up to the Pulitzer Prize, and National Book Award-winning #1 New York Times bestseller The Underground Railroad, Colson Whitehead brilliantly dramatizes another strand of American history through the story of two boys sentenced to a hellish reform school in Jim Crow-era Florida.

“Whitehead follows his dynamic, highly awarded, best-selling Civil War saga, The Underground Railroad, with a tautly focused and gripping portrait of two African American teens during the last vicious years of Jim Crow. . . Whitehead’s magnetic characters exemplify stoicism and courage, and each supremely crafted scene smolders and flares with injustice and resistance, building to a staggering revelation.”
