Dear Reader,

We had so much fun celebrating Content's 5th birthday! We're grateful to everyone who turned out to shop, sign our chalkboard birthday card*, and help raise much-needed funds for Operation Joy. Thanks to you and your generosity, we raised over $1000 in additional funds for books for kids in need in and around Northfield -- that means we more than TRIPLED the budget for books for Operation Joy, and ensured that every child served by this key program will get a fun, new book for the holidays.

Now that we're thoroughly in the holiday spirit, we've launched our extended holiday hours and are ready to make a personal shopping appointment for you whenever you like. If you missed our 3rd annual Black Friday Gift Book Talk, you can check out Jason's list of recommendations on our website. We've got a great author event lined up for tonight, and look forward to seeing you at Winter Walk next week, too! Read on for details on all the festivities to come.

* that chalkboard birthday card is still hanging on our door, so stop in and sign it any time!

Adam Minter on SECONDHAND: Travels in the New Global Garage Sale

Tonight! Thursday, December 5th | 7:00PM

Any idea what really happens to all your stuff after you're done using it? Join Adam Minter, author of Junkyard Planet, as he sits to talk with us about his new book Secondhand: Travels in the New Global Garage Sale, a journey into the surprising afterlives of our former possessions. Adam was on FRESH AIR with Terry Gross last night, and tonight he's coming to Content!

“Minter's travels through the afterlife of stuff are revelatory, terrifying, but, ultimately, hopeful. Secondhand helps us to see a world of possibility in the objects we discard.”  —Elizabeth Kolbert, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Sixth Extinction

“This is a fascinating, eye-opening look at a dynamic, largely unseen world that only starts when one drops off
something at a thrift store.” —Publishers Weekly

Downsizing. Decluttering. A parent’s death. Sooner or later, all of us are faced with things we no longer need or want. But when we drop our old clothes and other items off at a local donation center, where do they go? Sometimes across the country—or even halfway across the world—to people and places who find value in what we leave behind.

From journalist Adam Minter, author of Junkyard Planet, comes Secondhand: Travels in the New Global Garage Sale, an unexpected adventure into the often-hidden, multibillion-dollar industry of reuse: from thrift stores in the American Southwest to vintage shops in Tokyo, flea markets in Southeast Asia to used-goods enterprises in Ghana, and more. Along the way, Minter meets the fascinating people who handle—and profit from—our rising tide of discarded stuff, and asks a pressing question: In a world that craves shiny and new, is there room for it all?

Secondhand offers hopeful answers and hard truths. A history of the stuff we’ve used and a contemplation of why we keep buying more, it also reveals the marketing practices, design failures, and racial prejudices that push used items into landfills instead of new homes. Secondhand shows us that it doesn't have to be this way, and what really needs to change to build a sustainable future free of excess stuff.
