Dear Reader,

It's been a postcard-perfect Northfield summer all around. We relished the chance to help our friend Joy Riggs launch her fabulous new book, perfectly timed to charm and edify visitors to the Vintage Band Festival.

We sponsored a wildly successful (if we may say so ourselves) downtown Northfield scavenger hunt, in which 23 Waldos (and one Odlaw) were hidden in local businesses. We were, frankly, astonished at the number of kids who found every single Waldo, and we loved hearing tales of downtown exploration and discovery from regulars and Content newbies alike. Waldo and the elusive Wizard Whitebeard even made an appearance for our Waldo party and prize drawing! Big thanks to everyone who played, and all our neighbors who made it possible.

We're still savoring every day of the easy summer pace, lunch breaks on the riverwalk, and cabin reading recommendations, but also gearing up for fall...and even w*****. We don't want to freak you out, but 2020 calendars have arrived, and we know some of you will want to shop early for the best selection. The rest of you can just ignore them until December, okay?

One of our favorite signs of the changing seasons is coming up next week: our 4th annual Back-to-Bookclub Night is on Thursday, August 22nd at 7 pm. Before that, though, we've got a couple of great author events, a late-summer sale at kids'content, and more. Read on for details!

Shane Burcaw, author of Strangers Assume My Girlfriend is My Nurse and Laughing at My Nightmare

Saturday, August 17th @ 4 pm

We're pleased to host author, YouTube sensation, and disability activist Shane Burcaw for a reading and signing event for his latest book, STRANGERS ASSUME MY GIRLFRIEND IS MY NURSE. On the surface, these essays are about day-to-day life as a wheelchair user with a degenerative disease, but they're actually about family, love, and coming of age.

"With the same frankness and gallows humor that marked his Laughing at My Nightmare ... An accessible, smart-assed, and unexpectedly tender exploration of life, love, and disability."
- Kirkus

From the author of Laughing at My Nightmare—a YALSA Award for Excellence in Nonfiction Finalist, Bank Street Best Children’s Book of the Year, and ALA Quick Pick for Reluctant Young Adult Readers—comes another collection of evocative and humor-infused essays about living with a disability in an able-bodied world.

With his signature acerbic wit and hilarious voice, twenty-something author, blogger, and entrepreneur Shane Burcaw is back with an essay collection about living a full life in a body that many people perceive as a tragedy. From anecdotes about first introductions where people patted him on the head instead of shaking his hand, to stories of passersby mistaking his able-bodied girlfriend for a nurse, Shane tackles awkward situations and assumptions with humor and grace.

Dan Hill, author of Two Cheers for Democracy: How Emotions Drive Leadership Style

Monday, August 19th @ 7 pm

Content gladly welcomes author Dan Hill as he shares his newest book Two Cheers for Democracy: How Emotions Drive Leadership Style.

Not only in America, but around the globe democracy is under siege. In an era personified by Donald Trump, illiberal--increasingly hollow--democracies, and "strongman" dictatorships, it's time to take a closer look at the nature of the leaders who shape our world. The policies or positions that leaders adopt may change, but rarely their personalities. All of us have signature facial expressions that reveal the emotions we gravitate to most often over time. The difference is that in leading a country, the head of state's feelings can hold sway over events likely to greatly impact every citizen's life and well-being.

In Two Cheers for Democracy, the focus is on identifying emotional patterns that help to predict three key things about leaders: will they prove to be competent, compelling, and compassionate in executing their official duties? This book analyzes all 44 U.S. presidents to date and every U.S. presidential debate ever held, from 1960 to 2016, in addition to 79 foreign leaders. With results from the American Political Science Association's presidential greatness rankings, Gallup polls, and Freedom House's annual survey of countries' commitment to democracy as benchmarks, the book takes seriously--in a unique way--the central question of today: what's the personality of the people leading us, and can we trust them to look out for the public good?
