Dear Reader,

We have all been looking forward to the night of poetry we've had scheduled for tonight, a group reading from the wonderful collection, UNDOCUMENTED: Great Lakes Poets Laureate on Social Justice. Unfortunately, Mother Nature had other plans, and our poets can't make it tonight! We'll get back to you as soon as we have a new date for this program.

In the meantime, our sidewalks are cleared and the bookstore is cozy. Bundle up and come downtown to dream of spring with a new gardening, baseball, or birding book book or pick up a puzzle to help while away the snowbound hours. And don't forget, we're celebrating National Poetry Month with a juicy discount: take 10% off one poetry title, 20% off two, and 30% off three (consignment titles excluded). This includes poetry books for kids, of which we have a rather delectable selection, if we may say so ourselves. They make great bedtime reading, and might inspire a young person you love to put pen to paper themselves!

Michael Bazzett reads from his translation of POPOL VUH

Tuesday, April 23rd @ 7 pm

Please join us to hear Michael Bazzett read from his acclaimed translation of The Popol Vuh, which was named one of the New York Times Best Poetry Books of 2018.

The K’iche’ creation myth of The Popol Vuh is thousands of years old, one of the only epics indigenous to the Americas. By turns poetic and lucid, sinuous and accessible, this verse translation—the first of its kind—breathes new life into an essential tale.

"Mr. Bazzett's translation offers a welcome path into the power of The Popol Vuh as beautiful literature. . . . [his] arrangement and format give the work its own authentic-sounding rhythm and cadence, something that is lost a bit in the recent scholarly editions . . . Mr. Bazzett writes that his intent was to create a more accessible source for students, 'a version of the myth they could disappear into, a verse version that truly sang.' He has succeeded." --Wall Street Journal
