A NOTE FROM OUR PRESIDENT

Happy New Year!  I am grateful to all of you for all you have accomplished this past year.  Despite the challenges and obstacles set before us, you have all worked so hard to bring activities to our families and students.  The new year hasn’t quite started as I had anticipated with the recent surge in COVID-19.  With volunteers once again prohibited on our school campuses, it will be challenging to hold all of our programs as planned, especially when our students need us the most.

This past week, I have watched the numbers climb on the PVPUSD COVID-19 dashboard, not only for students but also for staff, which will no doubtedly contribute to the ongoing substitute shortage.  If you are credentialed or qualify to apply for a substitute credential, please consider doing so.

I hope in 2022, we see the end of the pandemic, and the conflict and division within our community can heal.  I wish each of you and your families much health and happiness in the New Year!

Mariko Hama
PVP Council President
2021-2022
AN IMPORTANT UPDATE FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT

Dear PVPUSD Community,

Please understand that the prevalence of Covid is extremely high right now with the omicron variant. We need everyone's help to keep our schools open. To that end, it is critically important that anyone who tests positive must stay away from our campuses. Current health orders require self isolation at home for a minimum of 5 days with the only exception being to seek medical care.

Additionally, I ask you to take the daily green screen and symptom check process seriously. Should your children have any signs of symptoms, please err on the side of caution and keep your kids at home.

With the high current number of cases, the manual contact tracing process is taking longer than usual. Our teams are working hard to test employees and students and to get notices out, however notifications are taking longer than usual due to the sheer volume.

Principals and administrators are working around the clock to keep our schools open and to help keep our students and staff safe. Please help them and help each other by doing your part.

Here are the home isolation instructions: http://publichealth.lacounty.gov/acd/docs/HomeisolationenCoV.pdf

This is the isolation order from DPH that covers positive cases: http://publichealth.lacounty.gov/media/Coronavirus/docs/HOO/HOO_Coronavirus_Blanket_Isolation.pdf

Respectfully,

Alex Cherniss, Ed.D
Superintendent of Schools

Council Nominating Committee

Delegates to the Council Annual Meeting

February is the deadline for elementary and intermediate schools to appoint or elect their delegates to the council annual meeting. January is the deadline for high schools.  It can be done in January at all schools.

 Here are the details:
  • You are allowed one delegate for every 50 members to a maximum of seven delegates. Schools with more than 350 members will have seven delegates.
  • Your president CANNOT be included as a delegate.
  • Your EVP and principal CAN be included as delegates.
  • Check your bylaws to see if you appoint or elect the delegates (Article IX, section 2, last sentence)  approx. page 11.
  • It is a motion at your Jan. or Feb. association meeting.  Example:  Parliamentarian says, "I move to appoint(or elect) the following people as delegates to the PVP Council Annual Meeting:  ........"
  • You can send Nancy Shafer the delegate names via email or use the link below to enter the names.

Unit Nominating Committees

  • Units should be electing their nominating committee in January (for March elections) or January or February (for April elections).
  • Check your bylaws to see how many committee members are needed (Article V, section 4 #c) and the month of your election (Article V, section 7).
  • EVPs may or may not be allowed to be members of the committee.  Check your bylaws (Article V, section 4 #d - it will be written in your bylaws if your EVP CANNOT be on the committee.  If it is not written in in the last sentence of section 4 #d then an EVP is allowed on the committee, if that person did not serve on the committee last year).
  • Presidents are not allowed to be members of the committee.
  • Anyone who served last year may not be a member of the committee this year.  Alternates may serve this year if they did not end up on the committee last year.
