COOL Happenings   |   October 2016

Hi <<First Name>>,

Autumn is the most colorful time of the year, with the trees, scrubs, and all of the harvest fruit showing their true colors.   Poet Humbert Wolfe wrote, "Listen!   The wind is rising and the air is wild with leaves.   We have had our summer evenings; now for the October eves!"   We hope you are having a beautiful and blessed autumn.  Here is what is happening at COOL Ministries this month:

As winter returns to Lake County in a few weeks, many of the dozens of children in our Housing program will need winter coats.   To many of us this doesn’t seem like a huge problem.   But if you are struggling to make ends meet, or are a single parent, and living on a tight budget buying new coats for several children can be a big expense.   If you can help the children in our homeless program please call Mindy at 847-662-1340.   Thank you for helping needy children in Lake County!

From Homeless to Homeowner
This month we celebrated with a family that came to us homeless with no place to turn last year.   This family was part of our Transitional Housing Program for just 14 months.   During their stay at COOL, they saved every dollar they could.   Working as a housekeeper at low wages this single mother of 4 children worked closely with our Case Manager and saved over $14,000 which she used to make a down payment on a home of her own!   They have truly moved from homelessness to self-sufficiency and we are so proud of her and happy that this family will never face homelessness again!

This month we said goodbye to our Pastoral Advisor, Rev. Richard Grudt of Trinity United Lutheran Church of Waukegan.   Unfortunately, the pastor had to resign due to a number of other obligations preventing him from being able to attend meetings and fulfill this role.

Pastor Grudt served the board faithfully for several years and will be missed at COOL.   Our directors are now in search for a new Pastoral Advisor to serve in this role.   Thank you Pastor Grudt for all of your support and hard work helping COOL to feed the hungry and house the homeless!
Chili Supper
Why not take a break from cooking on Thursday, November 10th, and join our friends at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Waukegan for a Chili Supper.   Dinner is just $10 and includes a bowl of chili, bread, beverages and desert!   Carryouts are available.   What an easy way to support a great cause!
Yankee Candle Sales
We are thrilled to have the opportunity to offer Yankee Candle Sales as a fundraiser to raise revenue for our Transitional Housing Program for homeless families with children. The sale is already underway online. Just visit COOL's web site and begin shopping today. Catalogs will be available September 9th for direct sales.  We anticipate these will be popular items as holiday gifts or simply to have at home and for your holiday events. COOL will receive 50% of all non candle items purchased and $10 for all large candles sold. This is surely a win-win for our supporters and the homeless! If you would like a supply of catalogs to sell candles at your church, business, school or event just call Mindy at 847-662-1340. We appreciate your help!

Empty Bowls
Christ Lutheran Vernon Hills is gearing up for their Empty Bowls event.   This is a soup supper on Sunday, November 6 from 5:00-7:30, with proceeds benefitting the COOL Food Pantry.   Those attending receive a souvenir hand painted bowl to remember the event and the hunger issues facing our communities.   Cost is just $10 per person.   The public is invited to this “COOL” event!
The COOL 5/10K Run/Walk on the Saturday morning after Thanksgiving is coming on the 26th of November.   Please mark your calendars to attend this event and walk or run the race to help COOL feed the hungry and house the homeless.   Pre-race registration begins at 8:30 with the race beginning at 9:30 AM.

Please share race information with your friends and neighbors to help a great cause.   For more information or to register go to getmeregistered.com

Reusable COOL shopping bags available at the low LOW price of only $4.00 each or 3 for $10!   This is your chance to help save the environment and help COOL feed the hungry and house the homeless too.   These large size grocery bags are very "COOL" to use when grocery shopping and you’ll love being a COOL shopper with these goodies!   If you want to help sell bags just give us a call at 847-662-1340.   To purchase bags, stop by the COOL office during business hours, or see any of our staff or board members for your COOL Bag!

In September, the COOL Food Pantries issued food to a total of 4891 individuals.   This represents a decrease of 1047 individuals served as compared to the same period in 2015 - a decrease in visitation of about 21%.  Pantry East served 3994 individuals and West served 897 individuals in the month of September.   Food distributed at COOL in the month was enough to make more than 58,000 meals!
