COOL Happenings   |   February 2016

Hi <<First Name>>,

           After nearly a year of uncertainty, COOL Food Pantry East and our Central Offices have moved!   Our new address is 800 W. Glen Flora Avenue, Waukegan, IL 60085.   Pantry East opened at the new building on Tuesday the 16th of February.   As in our previous location on Water Street, the pantry is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.   We also ask our visitors to arrive 15 minutes prior to closing if receiving food.   COOL Pantries are also open one Saturday morning each month.   Pantry East opens from 10 a.m. to 12 noon usually on the last Saturday of the month.   We suggest Saturday visitors call to confirm our open date if they are planning to visit on a Saturday.   There have been no changes to operation at Pantry West in Ingleside.   They are open Mondays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., plus one Saturday monthly from 10 a.m. to 12 noon.  Here is what is happening at COOL Ministries this month:
We thank all of the businesses and individuals who contributed and volunteered to help make our awesome new facility a reality!
Easter food donations are accepted daily during open pantry hours.
We extend our thanks to the entire community for supporting Help Them to Hope - a cause that helps COOL and others to continue our missions of service to those less fortunate!
Our 17th Annual COOL Plant and Flower Sale will be on May 7th.   Orders are due by Sunday the 20th of March, and order forms are available on our web site!
Our thanks to Thrivent Financial for their support of COOL Ministries!

The best features of our new Food Pantry location include a wide garage door and the addition of a new walk-in freezer/refrigerator combination. At the old building none of the doors were wide enough to allow us to move a pallet inside which meant that last year over a million pounds of food had to be moved by hand and cart indoors and stored in more than a dozen small freezers and refrigerators that were never meant for industrial use. However, our new walk-in units were expensive costing more than $30,000!

Moving has also been costly. Paying for movers, renovations, utility deposits, electricians, equipment, signs, business cards, forms and more is no easy task for an organization with limited resources.

To help us with these expenses we have an ongoing fundraiser to help us with these costs. So far our Walk-in Fund has raised $5,255.00 and the Moving Fund has raised $11,629.24 toward our goal of $30,000 for the walk in and $30,000 for the moving fund. Thank you to all who have helped us toward reaching our goal!

With your help COOL will no longer have to turn down food donations due to not having enough storage space! In the long run, we know this will save money on purchased food items and will allow us to improve our services to the families in need. If you can help us with these needs, please send your donations to COOL Ministries, 800 W. Glen Flora Ave., Waukegan IL 60085 and mark your donation Walk-in Fund or Moving Fund.
Unlike the Christmas and Thanksgiving holidays, our local food bank offers little assistance for pantries to assist families in need of Easter dinner and holiday items. Each year, COOL relies on the help of our Church partners and friends to put together Easter meals for families visiting the food pantries. Easter food donations are accepted daily during open pantry hours. For questions about food donations, please call Gayle at 847-662-1230.   You may also visit our website for more information and a printable shopping list for Easter meal items for the food pantries.
COOL and several other organizations received funds this month from Help Them to Hope!  It is truly a blessing each year to open the Lake County News Sun every day beginning at Thanksgiving and watch the fund grow throughout the holiday season. Donors large and small contribute to Help Them to Hope so that organizations like COOL can give hope to our neighbors in need when they find themselves with no place else to turn. On behalf of all of us at COOL we extend our thanks to the entire community for supporting this cause that helps COOL and others to continue our missions of service to those less fortunate!
In January COOL Food Pantries issued food to 5759 individuals with 4698 served at Pantry East and 1061 served at Pantry West. Overall, visitation decreased at COOL pantries by 636 individuals as compared to the same period last year. Hopefully, this is a sign of better times ahead for struggling families in Lake County.
Our Food of the Month:

* for February is breakfast items

* for March is tuna
