COOL Happenings   |   January 2015

Hi <<First Name>>,

We hope your new year has had a wonderful beginning and that you have terrific plans for 2015.   Poet Edith Sitwell said that "winter is the time for comfort, for good food and warmth, for the touch of a friendly hand and for a talk beside the fire."  Here is what is happening at COOL Ministries this month:
The COOL Family Housing Program encourages personal growth and develops self-sufficiency in our participants.

The New Year is here and we have so much at COOL for which we are thankful. In response to our Annual Appeal and Fall Newsletter, our faithful donors contributed to our mission in a big way with contributions large and small. Meanwhile, contributions for Holiday Meal Boxes resulted in additional funds which were used to purchase holiday meals for more than 1300 families.
Many donors contributed funds, food items, gifts, toys, cookware, quilts, clothing and more over the holiday season demonstrating the true meaning of Christmas giving. In fact, on the day before Christmas Eve a family contacted COOL as they had decided not to get each other Christmas Gifts and instead bought a stack of Walmart Gift Cards to be distributed at COOL to needy families at the Food Pantry.

The first unemployed mom we found had a back injury and no gifts for 5 children. She told us that she was just going to make Christmas a birthday party for Jesus for the kids to enjoy with a cake and balloons as it was all she could do. When we gave her gift cards for each of her children she cried and hugged us and of course our staff had happy tears too! What a pleasure it was to be part of such generous Christmas giving to others!

At COOL Family Housing we were blessed in late December to receive the deed to a duplex in Zion as a gift from generous donors who believe in our mission of transforming lives and helping families gain self-sufficiency. The property which is part of our Family Housing Program is now named “Henderson House.” What an amazing gift this is! The home consists of two newly renovated 2- bedroom units which are already occupied with families who are working and saving money for a better future while they work with our case manager to learn to properly budget their money, set goals and work to achieve them.

Now all we need is funding to maintain and operate the units and furniture items for the families. We are also praying for a washer and dryer for one of the units. If you can help with any of these items please call Shari at 847-662-1340.

With 2014 now behind us we now know that our Food Pantries gave food to 77,314 individuals last year which is enough food to make 927,768 meals. The pantries distributed 1,247,443 pounds of food in 2014.

In December the pantries served food to 670 individuals with 5016 served at Pantry East and 1691served at Pantry West. Visitation to both pantries increased in December as compared to the same month in 2014 with 668 more visitors at East and 232 more visitors at West. For the year ending in December COOL Pantries served 5,697 more individuals than in 2013.

Our Food of the Month:
