COOL Happenings   |   October 2015

Hi <<First Name>>,

           October has returned with its brisk days and bright autumn colors.   Elizabeth George Speare described October as: "After the keen still days of September, the October sun filled the world with mellow warmth...the maple tree in front of the doorstep burned like a gigantic red torch.   The oaks along the roadway glowed yellow and bronze.   The fields stretched like a carpet of jewels, emerald and topaz and garnet.   Everywhere she walked the color shouted and sang around her. . .in October, any wonderful unexpected thing might be possible."   We hope you are enjoying this special time of year.   Here is what is happening at COOL Ministries this month:
Christ Lutheran is hosting an Empty Bowls event at which you can eat a hearty meal and take home a lovingly hand-painted bowl as a reminder of the hungry in our communities.
November 12th at St. Mark's Lutheran

This month we welcomed a new case manager to COOL Family Housing. The new face at COOL is Mindy Lindholm of Ingleside and Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church.  She brings to COOL an extensive background in social services, case management and degrees in Psychology as well as Social Work.  Please join us in welcoming Mindy to COOL Ministries!
On Sunday the 25th of October, Christ Lutheran Church in Vernon Hills (595 Deerpath Dr.) is having a Empty Bowls soup supper event with proceeds benefitting both the COOL Food Pantry and Vernon Township Pantry. Those attending purchase a hand-painted bowl and receive a hearty meal. They then take the bowls home as a reminder of the event and the hunger issues facing our communities. The event is from 5 to 7:30 p.m. and the cost is $10 per adult with no charge for children under age five.  What a “souper” idea!

St. Mark's Lutheran in Waukegan (3350 N. Delaney Rd.) will hold their annual Chili Supper to benefit COOL Ministries on Thursday the 12th of November from 3:30 to 7:00 p.m.  Whether you dine in or carry out, this is a great opportunity to support a worthy cause and warm yourself up with a good meal at a time when the temperatures are getting cooler
. Diners are encouraged to bring a non perishable food item or canned goods to the event to help fill the pantry shelves for the holidays.  Dinner is $10 per person and carry-out orders are available.

The Annual COOL 5K/10K Run and Walk is on schedule for Saturday November 28th in Libertyville at the Old School Forest Preserve on St. Mary’s Road. Registration is available at Get Me Registered for $30 for the 5K and $40 for the 10K event.  You may also visit our website for the latest information and links to all COOL events.

The COOL Food Pantries were fortunate to have the opportunity to purchase pre-packed holiday meals this year from our friends at Northern Illinois Food Bank. These include all the items needed to make the holiday meal including a frozen turkey, vegetables, stuffing mix, mashed potatoes, gravy, cranberries and desert.  This year you can help a struggling family by purchasing a holiday meal for just $20 each.  Donations can be send directly to COOL Ministries at 127 W. Water Street and remember to include a note or mark your check for Holiday Meal Baskets.
At COOL Ministries we are always seeking volunteers but this season the need is greater than ever - especially at our Family Housing units. As any property owner knows, homes need maintenance. That means yard work, raking leaves in the fall, painting, repairing and maintenance jobs of all sorts. If you can help for a just one day or take a regular shift once per week, monthly or work on call, COOL needs you!!  We also need experts who can donate their skill whether it is in plumbing, carpentry, cleaning, lawn mower repair, appliances, electricians and more.

Maintenance jobs at COOL Family Housing arise when families move in and out. At that time the properties need routine care including painting, hanging window blinds, replacing smoke detector batteries, and furnace filters. More urgent needs include repairing broken windows, removing fallen tree limbs or helping with a plumbing issue. These issues arise from time to time as well.  Our maintenance team is currently led by retired contractors who have many years of experience but as they have gotten older they are finding that painting an apartment or boarding up a window is not as easy as it once was. Please contact Mindy or Diane at 847-662-1340 if you have maintenance time, skill or ideas that could help us maintain our homes with pride.

In September 2015, the pantries issued food to a total of 5938 individuals (4652 individuals served at East and 1286 at Pantry West). This represents a decrease of 730 individuals served at Pantry East and 129 individuals at Pantry West as compared to the same period in 2014.  COOL provided enough food to to make 71,256 meals last month issuing food to 2439 families.
Our Food of the Month:

* for November is tuna
