COOL Happenings   |   September 2015

Hi <<First Name>>,

September is upon us with autumn to commence beginning this Wednesday.   It is time for back-to-school, fall planting in the garden, harvest festivals, homecomings, and thinking about all the chores that must be completed before winter.   John Updike described September as: "The breezes taste of apple peel.   The air is full of smells to feel - ripe fruit, old footballs, burning brush, new books, erasers, chalk and such.   The bee, his hive, well-honeyed hum, and Mother cuts chrysanthemums."
We hope you are enjoying this changing of the seasons.   Here is what is happening at COOL Ministries this month:
Your prayers are requested as we work through all of the licensing, permitting and other issues involved with moving COOL to a new location.
If you can donate storage space for next year's Rummage Sale, call Tera at 847-662-1340.
Our thanks to Thrivent Financial for their support of COOL Ministries!
Christ Lutheran in Vernon Hills will be hosting an Empty Bowls event at which you will eat a hearty meal and take home a lovingly hand-painted bowl which you can then use as a reminder of the hungry in our communities.

Moving update -  Anyone visiting Pantry East in Waukegan knows that COOL outgrew this space long ago and the situation is only getting worse.   Last year our volunteers and staff moved well over a million pounds of food through our doors.   This had to be done by hand and cart as all of the doors at the building are too narrow to allow a palate to pass.

Earlier this year we were thrilled to announce that we were preparing to move.   A very generous donor has purchased a building just for our use and will help us renovate it too.   This is surely a tremendous blessing.

Sadly, our move is on hold indefinitely.   Though we still need to relocate to a larger, more productive space, all of our efforts to comply with zoning requirements seem to have failed.   We've met with Alderman, the Mayor, our neighbors, and attorneys.   We have found ourselves wondering what more we can do.   But there is a solution.   We know from the scripture that "with God all things are possible."

We must remember that COOL is not about any one of us, or about a building, or a new office or a productive storage space.   This ministry is about doing God's work.   Our mission is about helping those who cannot help themselves , to feed the hungry and house the homeless while encouraging self-sufficiency.   So please take a moment and say a prayer for our move while we wait to see how He will work this out for His work at COOL.

The COOL Rummage Sale was quite a success last month thanks to many of you and the members of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Waukegan. Proceeds from the sale resulted in a net profit to COOL in the amount of about $1400. In addition, COOL received $1000 in matching funds from Thrivent Financial resulting in a total of $2500 in revenue from the sale. We hope to make a rummage sale an annual COOL event. However, we learned that this event takes a lot of hard work and many helping hands to be successful. If you can donate storage space for next year’s event or would like to volunteer to help please contact us at 847-662-1340. We look forward to hearing from you!
On Sunday the 25th of October, Christ Lutheran Church in Vernon Hills is having a Empty Bowls soup supper event with proceeds benefitting both the COOL Food Pantry and Vernon Township Pantry. Those attending purchase a hand-painted bowl and receive a hearty meal. They then take the bowls home as a reminder of the event and the hunger issues facing our communities. The event is from 5 to 7:30 p.m. and the cost is $10 per adult with no charge for children under age five.  What a “souper” idea!

St. Mark's Lutheran in Waukegan will hold their annual Chili Supper to benefit COOL Ministries on Thursday the 12th of November from 3:30 to 7:00 p.m.  Whether you dine in or carry out, this is a great opportunity to support a worthy cause and warm yourself up with a good meal at a time when the temperatures are getting cooler.

The Annual COOL 5K/10K Run and Walk is on schedule for Saturday November 28th in Libertyville at the Old School Forest Preserve on St. Mary’s Road. Registration is available at Get Me Registered for $30 for the 5K and $40 for the 10K event.

In August 2015, the pantries issued food to a total of 6146 individuals.   This represents a decrease of 159 individuals served as compared to the same period in 2014.   COOL provided enough food to families to make 73,752 meals last month issuing food to 2487 families.
Our Food of the Month:

* for October is breakfast foods
