COOL Happenings   |   August 2016

Hi <<First Name>>,

As the evenings get shorter and summer begins its inevitable drift towards autumn, we are thankful to be reminded of what a special time of year is late summer.   Journalist and author William F Longgood wrote, "A late summer garden has a tranquility found no other time of year."   We hope you are having a beautiful and blessed summer.  Here is what is happening at COOL Ministries this month:
Don Henderson
Applebee's in Zion
Saturday 26 November
Calling all gardeners
Our thanks to Thrivent Financial for their support of COOL Ministries!
Our friends, supporters and staff were thrilled to have the chance to attend the Gurnee Days annual Testimonial Dinner this year honoring Don Henderson who has been an outstanding supporter of COOL Ministries!   COOL Executive Director, Diane Thackston, was among the presenters at the event and did a great job sharing information about the enormous impact Don’s support has had at COOL.   Don has helped expand the COOL Family Housing Program for homeless families, and he has donated building space and more in order to relocate our COOL East Food Pantry and Central Offices!

The Daily Herald ran a nice article about this honor for a very deserving gentleman.

School Supplies for Needy Families
As children return to school throughout Lake County, COOL receives an overwhelming number of calls from families looking for help with school supplies of all sorts.   In the past we have received book bags and supplies from local businesses who collected these items.   But this year we have not received any school supplies at all!   If you can help the children in our homeless program please call Mindy at 847-662-1340.   Or if you have some extra supplies and would like to help you can simply stop by our Pantry East warehouse any time Monday through Friday from 10 AM – 2 PM and drop off items to be distributed to our visitors in need.   Thank you for helping needy children in Lake County!
Dine Out and Donate
Why not take a break from cooking on Thursday September 15th and dine out at Applebee’s in Zion and support COOL Ministries. Our friends at Applebee’s will donate 10% of guest checks to our cause if you present a COOL Flyer when eating any time day or evening on September 15th. What an easy way to support a great cause!    Printable flyers are available on our web site.
Yankee Candle Sales
We are thrilled to have the opportunity to offer Yankee Candle Sales as a fundraiser to raise revenue for our Transitional Housing Program for homeless families with children. The sale is already underway online. Just visit COOL's web site and begin shopping today. Catalogs will be available September 9th for direct sales.  We anticipate these will be popular items as holiday gifts or simply to have at home and for your holiday events. COOL will receive 50% of all non candle items purchased and $10 for all large candles sold. This is surely a win-win for our supporters and the homeless! If you would like a supply of catalogs to sell candles at your church, business, school or event just call Mindy at 847-662-1340. We appreciate your help!
The COOL 5/10K Run/Walk on the Saturday morning after Thanksgiving is coming on the 26th of November.   Please mark your calendars to attend this event and walk or run the race to help COOL feed the hungry and house the homeless.   Pre-race registration begins at 8:30 with the race beginning at 9:30 AM.

Please share race information with your friends and neighbors to help a great cause.   For more information or to register go to

We still have a few reusable COOL shopping bags available at the low low price of only $4.00 each!   Or you can buy 3 for $10 to save the environment and help COOL feed the hungry and house the homeless.   These large size grocery bags are very COOL to use when grocery shopping and you’ll love being a COOL shopper with these goodies!   If you want to help sell bags just give us a call at 847-662-1340.   To purchase bags, stop by the COOL office during business hours, or see any of our staff or board members for your COOL Bag!   Questions?   Just call us at 847-662-1340.
Calling all gardeners!   If your bountiful harvests are larger than you really need, COOL is accepting produce at the food pantries if any gardeners want to donate extra crops.
July brought decreases in visitation to both COOL Food Pantries.   A total of 4749 visitors were served. Pantry East served 3803 individuals and West served 943 individuals.   This represents a decrease of 1273 individuals at Pantry East and a decrease of 428 individuals at Pantry West as compared to the same period last year.   We have heard from the food bank and other pantries that they are seeing similar trends.
