Snowy Mountains Special Activation Precinct

In 2018 we worked on Go Jindabyne, a master plan to revitalise the town of Jindabyne.

Feedback and findings from technical studies highlighted the need to extend Go Jindabyne and look at the broader Snowy Mountains region.

As a result, we transformed Go Jindabyne into the Snowy Mountains Special Activation Precinct (SAP).

Snowy Mountains Master Plan

Through the Snowy Mountains SAP, we will create a new Master Plan for the Snowy Mountains.

The Master Plan focuses on:

  • increasing year-round tourism to grow the regional economy
  • creating year-round employment opportunities
  • investing in the region's infrastructure to meet the growing needs of residents, seasonal works and temporary visitors, and
  • attracting more visitors to the region from Australia and the world, transforming the Snowies into Australia’s Alpine Capital

The Snowy Mountains SAP will continue to focus on Jindabyne (including East Jindabyne and Tyrolean Village) but also look at Kosciuszko National Park and alpine resorts (Thredbo, Perisher and Charlotte Pass) and the major transport corridors of Alpine Way and Kosciuszko Road.

The area of the Snowy Mountains SAP will be confirmed through the master planning process.

Our Snowy Mountains Special Activation Precinct fact sheet (PDF, 1.04 MB) has more information about the Snowy Mountains SAP.

Vision and aspirations

The vision for the Snowy Mountains SAP was available for public feedback in August 2020. This feedback has now been reviewed and we will be considering the opinions and views of the community while developing the draft Master Plan.

View Feedback here

The vision for the Snowy Mountains SAP incorporates feedback from Go Jindabyne and the Snowy Monaro Destination Management Plan. The vision also achieves the priorities of the NSW Government and Snowy Monaro Regional Council. The vision guides the creation of the Snowy Mountains draft Master Plan.

We have also commenced a range of technical studies in the fields of planning, environment, economics, engineering, legislation, and a potential airport, which will build on the Go Jindabyne technical studies to ensure the region is environmentally, economically and socially resilient.

We expect to release the results of the technical studies and draft Master Plan for feedback in 2021.

We will continue to engage with the community in early 2021 and once the draft Master Plan is released.
