A Message from John Barrilaro

Understandably there is a lot of concern in the community about COVID-19 (Novel Coronavirus) and the impact it could have our health and the health of our family and friends, particularly those who are vulnerable.
I can confirm, as at 9 am today (Thursday 19/03/2020), the Southern Local Health District has recorded NO positive COVID-19 results in the Monaro.
Please appreciate that this could change at any time, so do your part to help prevent the spread of this illness.
For anyone who is showing the symptoms, a COVID-19 Assessment Centre is operating at Queanbeyan District Hospital, Monday to Friday 10:30 am - 2:30 pm. Entry is via Erin Street at the rear of the hospital, with dedicated parking - please make sure you follow the signs. You will ONLY be tested if you fit the COVID-19 testing criteria.
In the coming days a COVID-19 Assessment Centre will open in Cooma, with the finer details to be announced shortly.
I am in constant contact with our local health district and I can assure our region is prepared, with all resources and protocols in place to test patients and to treat those who may test positive.
As a community, we need to do everything we can to ensure we are looking after one another over the coming days and months.

NSW Health is recommending people with acute, cold, flu-like symptoms who are returned travellers, or a contact of a confirmed case, be tested for COVID-19.

Public Gatherings and Events:

All ‘non-essential’ mass gatherings of more than 100 people indoors and 500 people outdoors should not occur. This does not include work, schools, universities and childcare centres.

Travel Advice:
  • All Australians are advised not to travel overseas:
  • DFAT is urging all Australians overseas to return home.
  • All overseas arrivals entering Australia are required to practise social distancing and isolate themselves for a period of 14 days.
  • NSW Public Schools are adopting social distancing measures requiring the cancellation of assemblies, excursions, travel, and some events.
  • The NSW Department of Education is continuing to prepare for further closures if necessary with scaling up of technology, additional training of staff and preparation of offsite lessons. Find out more:

Social distancing:

Social distancing reduces the risk of catching viruses like COVID-19. You can still work and use public transport but you should avoid crowds and gatherings, stay 1.5 metres away from others, avoid shaking hands, hugging and kissing and avoid visiting vulnerable people. More at

Diggings Terrace Road Closures next week

Dear All,
Next Monday and Tuesday 23rd & 24th March, there will be intermittent road closures at the Riverside Corner on Diggings Terrace to allow for the installation of a fire hydrant at Aspects Chalets.
Traffic control will be in place at the site and road closed ahead signage will be in place at Bela’s Corner and the Hotel Turnaround to advise motorists when it is closed.  Access to Crackenback Ridge from Friday Drive will be unaffected and vehicle access to Riverside Cabins will only be available from the Diggings Terrace uphill side during the closures.  The road will remain open after hours.
We will endeavour to minimise disruptions where possible, please feel free to let anyone you may feel will be affected but not see this note know.
