School Supplies update

We understand that Clorox wipes are difficult to find. If you cannot find any, no worries, we currently have plenty. However, we don't know how long they will last, so if you are able to purchase some before Christmas we would appreciate it very much.

Secondly, I'd like to add to your list (sorry). We need a place/way to store the students' masks when they are not wearing them. Can you purchase one of these and put your child's name on it? You should be able to find one at Walmart.

Kindergarten Families
Kindergarten families that have not already done so may drop off their school supplies on Saturday, August 22nd between 10 - 1pm. Please wear your mask when you enter the building.

Return-to-Learn update
Although we will make every effort to educate our students in the classroom for the entire school year, we are prepared for online learning if necessary. The following guidelines have been communicated by the Iowa Department of Education.

Temporary Continuous/Remote Learning for an entire school building or district for up to 14 days may be requested if BOTH of the following criteria have been met.

  • 15-20% positivity in the county on average over the past 14 days
  • 10% absenteeism among students expected for in-person learning

Only the Departments of Education and Public Health can make the determination and provide temporary authorization to move to 100% online or remote learning. This plan is fluid and subject to change as more information becomes available.

Attention 4th through 6th grade girls. Volleyball practice begins Monday, Aug. 31 after school until 5:00. No practices due to Y-Camp on Wed, Thur and Fri., Sept 2-4. Practices will resume after Labor Day on Tuesday, Sept 8.

3-year-old preschool
The 3-year-old program will begin on Monday, August 24th. We currently have openings in this preschool program. Parents can choose from the following offerings: from 8 - 11am, Mon.-Wed.-Fri., or Tu.-Th. The everyday option is also available, and St. John offers wraparound childcare from 7am - 6pm each school day. If interested, please call the school at 319-334-7173 for a registration packet.

Summer Reading
Again this summer, if your child is entering grades 2 through 8, he/she will be required to read. If they are an incoming 2nd through 4th grader, the student will be required to read two books. If they are entering 5th through 8th grade, they are required to read three books. Reading will be verified through the Reading Counts program. If the book does not exist in the Reading Counts library please contact your child's teacher for approval. I will be here Monday through Thursday each day, from 8am - 2pm; exceptions can be made by contacting me. I will be available to your students so they can return and check out books as well as take the Reading Counts tests. Most of the books on the list are available in our Public library. Those students who read seven books or more will be invited to breakfast, hosted by the principal.
