Principal's News

The Internal Revenue Service has proposed new regulations that would limit the federal deductibility of individual donations to School Tuition Organizations (STOs) in Iowa.   Donors to the STO program currently receive a 65% state income tax credit and can deduct the entire amount of the donation on their Federal return.  STOs use those donations to give out tuition grants to qualifying families, allowing them to afford tuition at an Iowa nonpublic school.  Under this proposed IRS regulation, donors would only be able to deduct 35% of their donation on their Federal return. This proposed rule is a huge disincentive to STO donors.  When donations to STOs go down, the ability of STOs to help families is drastically reduced. St. John School was awarded over $30,000 in aid this year alone. Help us voice our objection to this rule by sending a message to Senators Grassley and Ernst and/or Bruce Bearinger of the U.S. House, asking them to assist us in this effort.

Vote for SJS
Please click on the following link and vote for SJS, for a chance for a $25,000 grant.

Our DayCare and LatchKey enrollment is nearly at its limit. Some days we are at maximum capacity. Therefore, I strongly encourage you to reserve your spot as early in advance as possible. Additionally, although we have perhaps the lowest rates in the area, we charge $1/hr more for unannounced drop-ins. Please let us know if have to cancel your scheduled time in DayCare or LatchKey, so we don't have to turn others away.
Middle School Service
Soon it will be October and many middle school service projects will begin. Our first project for the year will be sock babies for the NICU in Iowa City.  Sock dolls are given to new parents to use to comfort their babies if they are too little or sick and can not go home yet. The Mom, Dad or caregiver can place the doll inside their clothing, close to the skin and the doll will soak up their scent. The next time they visit the baby, the doll is placed near the baby to snuggle and/or prop towards and the baby will feel the comfort and smell of their loved one. Please help us in this effort to provide comfort to NICU babies by donating toddler socks size 12-24 months size. If you are able to donated more then one pair, it would help us to provide cuddles to more then one NICU unit in surrounding areas too.
