Making Waves for our Returning Heroes - Issue #1 November 2014
Welcome to Making Waves, Wave Academy’s new e-newsletter sharing updates and stories from our work providing healing aquatic therapy to veterans living with Post-Traumatic-Stress (PTS).  Thank you for your interest in joining the Wave Academy movement.

For new followers, we are a San Diego-based nonprofit – home to one of the largest military populations in the country – serving veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan war era diagnosed with PTS, as well as family members and caregivers involved in their recovery.
Fighting a Crisis of Epidemic Proportions
Just how big is the problem?
  • Of the more than 2.6 million service men and women who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, data indicates that 20-35 percent have come home with PTS.
  • 1,000 veterans of these wars are diagnosed each week with PTS.
  • There are tens of thousands of families struggling with  PTS, which left untreated, can result in alcoholism, debilitating depression and suicide – evidenced by the alarming statistic that 22 veterans commit suicide every day in the U.S.
All across this country, we have communities in crisis.  We are fighting for the health of veterans by providing a specialized warm water therapy – Aquatic Bodywork Therapy (ABT) – now proven to reduce the symptoms of PTS.
New Promising Research for a Brighter Future is Here
An Evaluation of the Wave Academy Approach to Reducing PTS

Since our inception, we have been gratified to learn that our therapy is making a meaningful difference for our clients as they share personal accounts of their improving physical, mental and emotional health and how our therapy has changed, and often saved, their lives.  But we wanted to go further…

Last year we set out to evaluate our program to explore how it could measurably reduce the symptoms affecting clinically diagnosed veterans with PTS.  We partnered with the Center for Research and Reform in Education Institute at Johns Hopkins University - the #1 ranked graduate school of education according to U.S. News & World Report - to analyze data on 15 veterans undergoing an eight-week ABT treatment protocol.

We are extremely proud to share that the evaluation yielded significant results with clients experiencing a more than 28% decrease in PTS symptoms over eight weeks.  This means that the warm water therapy brought about improved sleep duration and quality, decreased pain and lower levels of anxiety.  And for veterans living with the crippling impacts of PTS, that improved peace of mind translates into a vastly improved quality of life.

Demand for our services is growing – as of November, we have conducted nearly 800 therapy sessions in 2014 to date – an almost 300% increase from 2013.  With your help, we can share this therapy with the individuals who need it most and cannot afford to wait.

Please help us give back to the brave service men and women who have done so much on our behalf and heal their families.
