Special Session Update #2
Dear Friends and Neighbors,
Two weeks ago, the legislature passed an operating budget, thus averting a government shutdown.  I am glad that legislators from across the political spectrum were able to compromise and kept Alaska open for business.  A few important notes about this budget:
  • Fully funds education;
  • Fully funds troopers and prosecutors, including an additional prosecutor in Anchorage;
  • Reduces agency spending in the operating budget by $129 million compared to last year;
  • Pays out a $1,100 PFD, an amount equal to the historical average of the dividend.
While I am glad that we compromised on the budget, we did not address our state’s long-term financial issues.  Continuing to draw from savings is not responsible and prolongs the economic uncertainty gripping our businesses and working families.  Reducing the PFD while paying out tax subsidies to the oil companies doesn’t match with my priorities either.  We have the resources to provide critical state services while still being the lowest taxed state in the nation.  But we need a financial plan to ensure our economic stability.  I am hopeful that the Senate looks at the facts (credit rating downgrades, the falling price of oil, etc.) and returns with a willingness to put a comprehensive fiscal plan into place for all Alaskans.
I hope to see you back in the neighborhood.
