You know how we've been looking for a home for ages?We searched in garages and carparks, libraries and pub gardens, with councils, community groups and housing developers... We nearly signed leases and then it all didn't work out at the last minute.
Well, the wait is finally over.
We can officially announce we're moving back to where it all began – in West Norwood!
We're moving in with a social supermarket called Community Shop. It's just behind West Norwood cemetery, next to Park Hall Business Centre and the recycling centre.
PHASE #1: SHIPPING CONTAINERS & MAKER DAYS
First up, we've ordered 2 shipping containers, which will sit in the carpark in front of Community Shop.
One container will be a mini shopfront, and the other will be our storage unit.
We think a Library of Things container is handy because it can be replicated and put in any community anywhere. Spare parking bays, school yards, parks...
Once these are on site, we'll be inviting in handy local people to help us build the furniture and paint up the containers – we'll have dates for your diaries soon!
PHASE #2: EVENTS SPACE
We'll also be using Community Shop's warehouse space, shown here. We'll be hosting Open Nights throughout the summer, as well as DIY and upholstery workshops, powered by the good people of West Norwood.
This will be our events space down the line – Open Nights, DIY workshops, upholstery classes...
HOW IT'LL WORK
1. Come to Library of Things at Vale Street – or browse our catalogue online
2. Join as a member either in the space or online, and load your account with some credit
3. Select the item you'd like to borrow – everything costs between £1-10 for up to 1 week
4. Collect your item and hear how to use it, with help from our Tool Ninja
5. Return it to us and tell us how it went!
We're sourcing our things from businesses big and small. We need our electrical things to be as good as new for health and safety reasons, so can't accept second-hand electrical donations.
Down the line, we might well ask you lovely lot if you have any non-electrical items that you no longer need.
WHAT ELSE HAVE WE BEEN UP TO?
We quit our jobs, so finally have time and energy to spend building Library of Things!
Have any of you ever done that borrowers? Quit the job for something riskier and more fun?
Whenever we remember we're our own bosses, we feel a bit like this guy:
