Happening This Week

Devotional Corner:

2 Corinthians 9:7: Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.

The following is one of my favorite Christmas Songs. It was written in 2000 by Newsong and was later turned into a movie. I think it teaches us how we should give to others not because we have to out of obligations to buy Christmas presents, but we should give because we have Jesus in our hearts and his love overflows through us. As you read the words to this song think about a Christmas gift that you gave that not only changed their lives but yours as well. Next Sabbath, I will be asking some of you to talk about those experiences during my message. Spoiler alert you might need tissue as you read this.

The Christmas Shoes

It was almost Christmas time, there I stood in another line
Tryin' to buy that last gift or two, not really in the Christmas mood
Standing right in front of me was a little boy waiting anxiously
Pacing 'round like little boys do
And in his hands he held a pair of shoes

His clothes were worn and old, he was dirty from head to toe
And when it came his time to pay
I couldn't believe what I heard him say

Sir, I want to buy these shoes for my mama, please
It's Christmas Eve and these shoes are just her size
Could you hurry, sir, daddy says there's not much time
You see she's been sick for quite a while
And I know these shoes would make her smile
And I want her to look beautiful if mama meets Jesus tonight

He counted pennies for what seemed like years
Then the cashier said, "son, there's not enough here"
He searched his pockets frantically
Then he turned and he looked at me
He said mama made Christmas good at our house
Though most years she just did without
Tell me Sir, what am I going to do,
Somehow I've got to buy her these Christmas shoes

So I laid the money down, I just had to help him out
And I'll never forget the look on his face when he said
Mama's gonna look so great

Sir, I want to buy these shoes for my mama, please
It's Christmas Eve and these shoes are just her size
Could you hurry, sir, daddy says there's not much time
You see she's been sick for quite a while
And I know these shoes would make her smile
And I want her to look beautiful if mama meets Jesus tonight

I knew I'd caught a glimpse of heaven's love
As he thanked me and ran out
I knew that God had sent that little boy
To remind me just what Christmas is all about

Sir, I want to buy these shoes for my mama, please
It's Christmas Eve and these shoes are just her size
Could you hurry, sir, daddy says there's not much time
You see she's been sick for quite a while
And I know these shoes would make her smile
And I want her to look beautiful if mama meets Jesus tonight
I want 'er to look beautiful if mama meets Jesus tonight

Sermon Description:

Have you ever wondered if it is right for a person of faith to sing and talk about Santa as if he was real, when we all know that he is a fake myth?  Should we simply throw out our Christmas trees, ornaments, yule logs, socks on the wall, presents, wreathes, and Santa suits and replace them with nativity scenes, creches, Bibles, lambs, and wise men?  For many people of faith, celebrating Christmas evokes a conflict of values.

On December 16 we will learn from the Bible and tradition that Christmas is like an iceberg; beautiful and dangerous.  Perhaps there is a way to celebrate the beauty without a titanic tragedy. If you listen, you may find out why "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" is a more truthful lyric than "Twas The Night Before Christmas."

John McGhee

Dear Friends
I am happy to invite you to be aware that a SS cell group continues.  I am working with Mark Everett and others to coordinate this Bible study / fellowship group.
In 14 weeks we cover some basic truths which bind the Seventh-day Adventist Family together.  Our textbook will be the Bible supported by the classic work by Ellen G. White, Steps To Christ.
Please see me or Mark Everett with the list of topics. You can also email Shawn Latham at for a digital PDF version.
If you want to review some delightful truths, or you would like to bring someone who is inquisitive about what Seventh-day Adventists believe, this may be just what you are looking for.
