Travel + Leisure Features Brickyard
The Brickyard’s model of a resort with lodgings dispersed in the nearby communities is not unique, as this recent report in T+L shows. But we’re proud to be recognized as a leader in this type of sustainable tourism making a contribution to our local community.

Mutianyu Number 1 Landmark in China
Mutianyu Great Wall continues to get the best reviews on TripAdvisor and outranks all other attractions in China. In fact, Mutianyu is the Number 7 most popular place to visit in the entire world!

Travel Tips
Looking for a winter getaway? In Charleston, South Carolina on a recent trip with his mother, Joan Spear, Jim stayed at the pitch perfect Wentworth Mansion, which has just been recognized as the Number 2 luxury hotel in the USA. They also visited food heaven Savannah, Georgia. Jim especially recommends The Grey, Cotton & Rye, and Nairobia’s Grits.

Winter Works at the Brickyard
This winter we have been redoing the Sky Terrace, upgrading our offices, replacing the roofs on two guest room buildings, and prototyping a guest room interior upgrade. We apologize for the minor inconvenience caused to guests and expect our annual repairs and maintenance to be all done before Easter Sunday 1 April.

Travelers’ Choice 2018: “We are honored to announce that the Brickyard Retreat earned recognition as a TripAdvisor Travelers' Choice destination for 2018, the sixth year running. And we have moved up to the No. 5 inn in all of China. Thank you to our guests and our dedicated team who have made this recognition possible.” -- Liang Tang and Jim Spear, The Schoolhouse Partners

Mystery Home
Frank Heubach won Rmb 888 for correctly identifying the Home in our last newsletter. Does anyone recognize this house? We will offer a free lunch for two at the Brickyard to the first two readers who email us the correct name. BTW ten of our vacation homes are dog-friendly so think of Fido when you plan your village stay with us.

Cooking with Randhir
Brussels sprouts are all the rage these days but we’ve been serving them for years, with Chef Randhir Singh riffing on a recipe originally from Jim’s family. See how easy it really is to make this scrumptious dish. And here’s a head’s up: we’re working on a book of memorable Schoolhouse and Brickyard menus and recipes to be published in the Fall -- stay tuned.

Sustainability in Action
Camden Dempsey, shown here on the left with his family and Jim Spear last Thanksgiving at the Brickyard, is working with The Nature Conservancy and the Boy Scouts of America to plant 100 trees near Hohhot, Inner Mongolia in Spring 2018 to mitigate soil erosion and promote a better ecosystem and reduce carbon emissions in the atmosphere. This is Camden’s Eagle Scout project. Learn more and donate for this good cause.
