Mother’s Day Coming Up:On 14 May Treat the mom in your family to our lavish champagne brunch with live jazz in the fresh air at our Brickyard Retreat at Mutianyu Great Wall. See the menu and book online.

May Day at Mutianyu
If you’re around Beijing for the holiday, Mutianyu is a lovely destination. We recommend coming out in the afternoon in order to miss the morning holiday traffic. Go for a hike, stay for dinner, or stay overnight. We may have some last minute availability for accommodations or meals at the Brickyard so please call 6162-6506 if you haven’t made plans. By the way, due to the holiday volume we have to restrict food and beverage service to guests who have made prior bookings. Please call us and we will do our best to get you a table. Thank you for your understanding -- and happy May Day!
Brazilian Singer Saturday Night
Stella Sabbatini will serenade our guests this weekend on Saturday night to celebrate the holiday. We’ll serve a special all-you-can-eat grill that evening for our guests. Sorry, no a la carte from 17:00-20:00.
Hootenanny Coming Up
We’re delighted to have The Hutong Yellow Weasels joined by old-time musicians Erynn Marshall & Carl Jones (shown above) coming to perform all evening on Friday 5 May. On the following Saturday morning they’ll lead an American folk dancing class from 10:30-12:00, free for our guests.
Another Brickyard Home
Here’s a snapshot, taken from the view terrace, of another local home renovation designed by our partner Jim Spear. We expect this home, which hasn’t been named yet (suggestions anyone?) to come on stream over the summer. It features a greatroom with fireplace and open kitchen, a master suite, and another bedroom and bath.
Our Guests Say…
Posted recently on TripAdvisor: The highlight of our stay was meeting the owners, Jim Spear and Liang Tang, whose passion and attention to all the Brickyard projects make this place such a unique experience. Like the Post Ranch Inn in Big Sur and the Inn at Newport Ranch in Fort Bragg, the Brickyard's restrained yet polished architecture demonstrates a deep respect for nature and the local heritage. Read the whole review and see images This image shows the Easter Egg Hunt during their stay.
Cooking with Randhir
This dish has been one of Chef Randhir’s most popular daily specials -- pan-fried pasta with pork sausage and chili, a meal in itself. We make it all from scratch but if you make it at home the dish also works well with store-bought ingredients. See the recipe and try it at home!

Partner’s Table: Been missing out on the good food, wine, and entertainment? We welcome you to join Jim & Liang for a private live jazz dinner on Saturday 20 May. The menu is a surprise from Chef Randhir. There’s only one table for 12 people so we suggest you book early.

Mystery Home
Eagle-eyed Katia Drevet identified Big Rock House as the Brickyard Home in the last two newsletters and so won an Rmb 776 credit. The first reader who identifies the home pictured above will win a credit of Rmb 388 toward a stay in a room at the Brickyard or the Home of their choice. Good luck loyal readers!
Traditional Craftspeople in Hebei
Over Spring Festival we spent a few days in counties around Zhangjiakou, including Weixian where we exited the expressway to Nuanquan Township. We visited Xigubao Village to see open air opera, taste traditional snacks from stalls, and experience the village holiday. One intersection was festooned with an entire set of handmade zodiac lanterns. After asking around, we reached an unmarked wooden gate and got the attention of the householders, Mr. & Mrs. Dong Jianxi, shown in their courtyard, who said they had indeed made the lanterns we’d seen and that they had been working at their craft for their whole lives...
Sustainability in Action
… How could we not special order a set? Our lanterns were finally ready two weeks ago and we sent a truck to retrieve them. We’ve had them mounted in the Great Wall Room and last Friday evening was the first time they were turned on. These whimsical lanterns remind us of how important and fun it can be to help sustain traditional handicrafts. -- Liang & Jim
