National Day: If you’re wondering how to spend the holiday… come on out to the Mutianyu Great Wall area. Skip the crowds and explore Beigou or another village. Have a local meal. Hike up to what William Lindesay calls the Wild Wall. We have a few Brickyard rooms left over the holiday and sometimes have a cancellation so feel free to contact us 6162-6506 on the spur of the moment.

Village Cookout on 30 September
Start your holiday in village style at the Brickyard… The local women on our kitchen staff have collaborated to create a dinner with their own family favorites. The feast will be served outdoors with many dishes made right at the buffet stations, including corn pancakes made from hand-milled fresh corn flour hot off the griddle. Learn more and book online.

Mid-Autumn Harvest Feast on 4 October
Every year we celebrate the Moon Festival in our village farmhouse Xiaolumian. We share the bounty of the harvest with traditional village favorites and we’re serenaded by local folk musicians. The softly lit orchard garden is the perfect place to watch the full moon rise. We usually have space for only 36 guests but do call 6162-6506 in case we still have room to squeeze you in.

New Addition to Our Garden
“I made Rock Trace while in residence at The Brickyard Retreat at Mutianyu Great Wall in China. I was thinking about the impermanence of life, journeys we all take, our relationship with the built environment and natural resource extraction. Tracing the rock is just that, a conceptual exercise examining what’s left as we walk, think, and work in and around nature. The wire piece is in direct conversation with the standing rock adjacent to it, speaking to the soul and energy within all things. As time passes, its natural patina will deepen our conversation on the inter-dependent relationship between nature and culture” explained August resident artist John K. Melvin.
Partner’s Table
Throughout the year we stage a series of intimate dinners to showcase the talents of Executive Chef Randhir Singh. Hosted by our partners Jim & Liang, there is only one round table for these surprise four course dinners married with a free flow of good wines. The next Partner’s Table will be on 28 October with a Halloween theme. Book early for a fun evening on

Talk About Heritage Tourism
Jim & Liang spent a week last month at Chateau St. Philippe in Saint-Jean-de-la-Porte, France with Mont Blanc views from the bedroom windows of this fortress built in 1032 A.D. The chateau was for rent as a whole vacation home with a live-in couple and housekeeping staff. Jim says this was food for thought about where to take our Brickyard Homes in the future.

In the News
CNN Money’s feature Exploring 10 great cities for business in Asia recommended Brickyard Retreat. See all of Kate Springer’s choices. Our hotel is great not only for getaways but also for unique company events and meetings. Contact us on us if you’d like more information about how you can stage a surprisingly affordable business event at the Great Wall.

Fun-Filled Fall: Check out our complete Events Calendar to find activities you won’t want to miss -- from Sunday Yoga to Jazz Grills to American Thanksgiving and more.

Mystery Home
This home is the Pavilion. No one identified it in the last two newsletters so as promised we made a cash donation of Rmb 1,776 to the United Foundation for China’s Health, the charity arm of United Family Healthcare. We have 11 Brickyard Homes, custom residences under the Great Wall, and we’ll try another contest in an upcoming newsletter.
Cooking with Randhir
We had lots of peaches all summer so Randhir made Grilled Peaches with Zabaglione. This dramatic dessert could be the climax of a dinner party -- why not try it at home?

All That Cabbage!
Fall has arrived in style at the Brickyard kitchen garden. Besides the cabbage we’re still harvesting greens, eggplants, peppers, and more that go right into our foods the day they’re picked. This is one aspect of our sustainability in action program.
