Partner’s Table Dinner
Executive Chef Randhir will personally prepare a special surprise fall menu for our next-to-last Partner’s Table for the 2018 season on Saturday 10 November. We welcome you to share this evening of good food and wine with our partners Liang Tang and Jim Spear. We have a few seats at the table still open so please contact us at 6162-6506 or to book the dinner which starts fireside with prosecco and canapes.

Live jazz and guests even get to take leftovers home. The reprise will be Saturday 24 November. Get all the details about the program and our special school bus service. Book via to enjoy a memorable Thanksgiving at the Great Wall.
Joe Hedges Adapts Beigou Ambient Sounds
Pictured here is our resident artist from a couple of years ago, Joe Hedges, with his partner in art and life, Jiemei Lin. Joe collected memories, images, and sounds during his stay in Beigou and from his base as an art professor in Washington has transformed those experiences into art. Listen to one of his musical compositions.
You can also read about his process of creation.
Reinventing Again
Please have a look at our brand new Schoolhouse website. You will learn how The Schoolhouse has been reinvented as an arts center and official sponsor of our fellows and resident artists as well as interns from around the world.
What is that big hole?
This picture was taken a few weeks ago not far from the Brickyard and now the excavation is complete. This gaping hole that is the beginning of a renovation and expansion of another Beigou villager’s abandoned house for one of Jim’s clients. By leasing these homes and turning them into vacation residences for city folk money and jobs are injected in the local community.
In the News
China Daily’s Yang Feiyue profiled our partner Jim Spear last month. If you’d like to know more about The Schoolhouse and the Brickyard please click here.

Mystery House
Katherine Munchmeyer identified Louis Kahn’s Parliament House in Dacca, Bangladesh in our last newsletter. This time, something closer to home. The first person to correctly identify the Brickyard Home shown here will win an Rmb 888 credit toward a stay in any of the Homes.
Cooking with Randhir
Avocado toast is so trendy but Randhir has created a Brickyard version available on weekends that is a luscious riff. Our partner Liang hates onions but she actually liked the pickled onions that complement the soft avocado. See the recipe and try at home.
Sustainability in Action
All that cabbage! We’ll use it in soups, make sauerkraut, and fry it up for guests, but mostly it will become a component of our staff meals during the winter to come. Imagine cabbage soup with pork bone broth and thread noodles, a traditional dish in these parts, to nourish the soul on cold days. It’s not on the menu but if you ask and our chef Song Cuihong has time, we’ll be happy to make a steaming bowl to order for you.
