Happy Birthday USA: The Brickyard is a business owned by American citizens. In honor of the Independence Day of their homeland we will offer a free beer to each adult USA citizen who eats with us on the Fourth of July from 11:30-16:00. One per adult guest with American passport, no purchase necessary.

Artists in Residence
Joe Hedges and Jiemei Lin are Schoolhouse resident artists this month. They’re pictured here the day after they arrived with Jim and Jennifer Lindsay (second from left) of Red Gate Gallery Residency and directors of other artist residency programs in Guangzhou, Singapore, and Malaysia who visited the Brickyard to share experiences with us.
Performance Art & Pop Up Exhibition This Saturday
See a live performance and talk by Joe Hedges and Jiemei Lin at 13:00-15:00 at the Brickyard followed by a pop up in our nearby artist residence. Learn more about the performance they have planned. This image shows a previous collaboration “Scroll Improvisation” performed in 2013
Community Service Day Saturday 8 July
Once a year we say thank you to our surrounding villages by donating a day of labor by most of our staff. We also donate the gross proceeds of our Brickyard lunch service 12:00-15:30 to the elderly of our township. Come out and make a difference!
Summer Partner’s Table
By popular demand we will add a special dinner on Saturday 22 July. As usual the menu will be surprise, the fixed price including canapes and wines is Rmb 360, and the meal will be hosted by Liang and Jim. By advance reservation, one table for 12. The image probably has nothing to do with the dinner but it does sum up the best and worst in us all

German Confirmation Class
The Brickyard was honored to host Pfarrer Ralf Richter’s 2017 confirmation class over a weekend last month. The sky was blue and the young people also enjoyed exploring the village… pictured here with a headless Confucius in the Beigou Village square. We are pleased to offer special assistance to nonprofit organizationsto help make a rural retreat feasible and we welcome enquiries.

Master Chef John Torode
The celebrity chef John Torode visited the Brickyard with his crew this month to learn about traditional Chinese home cookery from Liang. She taught him how to make her grandmother’s noodles in the Big Rock House kitchen and the lesson will be aired on television in the UK. We’ll post a link on our Facebook page.

Cooking with Randhir
Simple is hard. Try Randhir’s roast chicken to turn a simple family meal into something good enough for company. Plump chicken with golden skin, new potatoes, and meltingly crisp green beans. Read the recipe.

Sustainability in Action
Jim & Liang spoke last weekend at the Conference for the Revival of Chinese Villages held in three mountain villages in Taijiang County of Guizhou Province. Tiajiang's population is 97 per cent Miao and it is the poorest county in the province. Liang, a longtime collector of ethnic fabrics, is shown here with a mother and daughter who weave in their home in Changtan Village.
