SPRING IS HERE!

Welcome to Spring and all that is on offer this season. We're in for a busy few months and have some great events coming up so we hope you can join us!
NEW RELEASE: SO FAR, SO GOOD

In 1980, Craig completed a three-month traverse of the Southern Alps, an extended tramping and mountaineering trip that began near Milford Sound in Fiordland and finished in Nelson Lakes National Park.

Now, over 35 years later, he recounts the experience in So Far, So Good. In part this is the story of four friends embarking on a youthful adventure, dealing with all the challenges of rough terrain and wild weather that travelling in the mountains presents.

But it is also a thoughtful reflection, from one of New Zealand’s prominent conservationists, on what it means to spend an extended period of time in the wilderness. Heavily illustrated with evocative photographs taken on the trip, this is a book for anyone with an interest in tramping and mountaineering, and the transformative experience of wild places.

OFFICIAL BOOK LAUNCH: YOU ARE INVITED!
Thursday 13th October, 5.30pm, to be held at Craig Potton Gallery + Store, 255 Hardy Street, Nelson. Please RSVP by Friday 7th October for catering purposes.

A TRIBUTE TO OUR DEAR FRIEND: DR ANDREW DENNIS
In August we farewelled Andrew (Andy) Dennis. As well as being our number one 'behind-the-scenes' photographer and occasional "Gallery Assistant", Andy was a conservation hero.

During the 1970s and 80s, Andy actively participated in campaigns to protect West Coast forests from logging, and his articulate submissions were critical to the establishment of South Westland World Heritage Area, Paparoa National Park, Kahurangi National Park and the Horoirangi Marine Reserve.

He often channelled his knowledge of New Zealand's backcountry and it's landforms into his brilliant writing. He published The Paparoas Guide followed by Images of a Limestone Landscape, his first collaboration with Craig Potton. The Paparoas Guide was integral in campaigning for the establishment of Paparoa National Park in 1987 and his three National Park handbooks continue to be the go-to resource for Abel Tasman, Arthur's Pass and Aoraki/Mt Cook parks.

He was a member of the Forest and Bird Nelson-Tasman branch committee for more than 30 years and provided expertise for a huge number of submissions for conservation management plans and national park management plans. In 2011, Andy was awarded Forest & Bird's prestigious 'Old Blue' national conservation award and this year became a member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for his services to conservation.

Andy was a true gentleman and a loyal friend who is deeply missed.

Thanks for sticking with us through Winter. We hope to see you in Spring!
