FROM THE STATE HOUSE 
NEWS: House Bill 2737 sponsored by Representative Michael Halpin (D - Rock Island) passed from the Illinois House chamber unopposed recently. Previously, AISWCD staff joined partners in support of the bill, which recognizes the importance of soil health to the work of conservation districts in the enabling act. The bill has been sent to the Illinois Senate, where it is now sponsored by Senate Agriculture Committee Chairman, Senator Scott Bennett (D - Champaign).

Q&A with the New Illinois Ag Director: 'I have the Ability to Talk the Language'

When he was in the Illinois Senate, John Sullivan was the only farmer there and became the de facto spokesman for ag. Now he's Gov. J.B. Pritzker's new director of the Illinois Department of Agriculture, overseeing everything from meat inspections to medical cannabis. He opened up tp News-Gazette Media's Ben Zigterman about his ag background, his priorities and what the state can do to improve exports of Illinois crops.

SRC Graduate Returns to Speak to Students

Narissa Whitehurst, soil conservationist with the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) in Tazewell County, spoke to students in Jeff Bash’s Ag conservation class at Spoon River College recently.

Conservation Help is Available

The U.S. Department of Agriculture-Natural Resources Conservation Service can provide conservation assistance on agricultural and forestland. Ivan Dozier, Illinois Natural Resources Conservation Service state conservationist, said the agency has technical knowledge to develop a conservation plan for resource concerns and programs to help implement the plan.
