KNOX COUNTY SWCD WORKSHOP

RSVP! The next installment of the SWCD Cover Crop & Soil Health training workshops will occur on Thursday, August 8th, 2019 at the Knox County Agri Center (Knox County Farm Bureau). The featured speaker will be Pete Fandel, a cover crop specialist and professor at Illinois Central College. The free event is scheduled for 9AM - 3PM, with lunch provided. AG MEDIA DAY

Ag media convened on the Illinois State Fairgrounds as part of Ag Media Day to meet with officials from the Illinois Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources to learn about the upcoming Illinois State Fair. AISWCD was invited to participate in a forum to discuss conservation and the SWCD conservation delivery network.

PROJECT WINGSPAN

PROJECT WINGSPAN: Pollinator Partnership invites public land managers and private landowners with at least one acre of land in Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Missouri and Arkansas who are committed to long-term conservation of monarch, rusty patched bumble bee and other rare pollinator habitat to be a part of Project Wingspan! To participate, complete the preliminary online survey. If your site qualifies, you will get a FREE on-site review by Pollinator Partnership’s Monarch & Pollinator Habitat Coordinator who will be able to offer habitat development guidance. Plant material awards will be given to selected sites for habitat enhancement.

The survey deadline has been extended for private lands in Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Illinois and Indiana to August 15, 2019, and for all public lands until October 31, 2019. Visit this link to complete the survey today. https://pollinator.org/wingspan/survey

$5 Per Acre: Crop Insurance Reward Program Tied to Cover Crops

A pilot program that offers discounted crop insurance premiums for farmers planting cover crops begins this year.

The Fall Covers for Spring Savings: Crop Insurance Reward Pilot Program approved by the Illinois General Assembly includes $300,000 to the state Department of Agriculture.

The program provides a $5 per acre crop insurance reward for those eligible for the program and is for cover crops planted after harvest this year.

IDOA is working on the specifics of the program and Kris Reynolds, American Farmland Trust Midwest deputy director, and one of 15 members of the new program’s steering committee team, provided information at the recent Association of Illinois Soil and Water Conservation Districts annual conference.

Sherrard High School Teacher Wins Conservation Award

“It’s an honor,” said Bill Hammes, Sherrard High School agriculture instructor, about being named the Conservation Teacher of the Year this month by the Association of Illinois Soil and Water Conservation Districts (AISWCD), Illinois Department of Natural Resources, and the Illinois Audubon Society.

The award comes on the heels of an award he won in June. Hammes was chosen as Illinois Section 3 winnner of the Excellence in Teaching Award for Ag Education from the National Association of Agricultural Educators. He was nominated by Sherrard School District Superintendent Alan Boucher. There are 25 sections in the state of Illinois.
