Spring is here and everyone on our Thunder Bay and Orillia campuses is gearing up to celebrate Convocation 2015!

In this issue, we are profiling Education alum Gregory Lowan-Trudeau who is winning accolades for his innovative work in the fields of outdoor education and social activism. We are also pleased to announce the Picherack family's generous gift to the Bora Laskin Faculty of Law and the new John R. Craig Memorial CESME Award for Lakehead graduate students.

Exploring Education, Activism, and the Outdoors

The Picherack Family Supports Law School Renovations
Don’t let Frances Picherack’s tiny stature fool you. She is a woman of great character and tenacious spirit. Frances also personifies the word LOYAL – a quality that Dictionary.com defines as a commitment to a cause, ideal, custom, institution or product.
Her loyalty lies with her family, her community, and Lakehead University.
Frances is a Thunder Bay native, a Lakehead alumna, and a current member of Lakehead’s Board of Governors. She and her son Roman (McGill Law, 2008) have made a generous $30,000 gift from the Picherack Family Fund to the Bora Laskin Faculty of Law. Read More
The John R. Craig Memorial CESME Award
Susan, Bob, Jamey, Ian, and Mary Craig grew up skiing with their dad near the shores of Lake Superior. Their father John – affectionately known as “Big Johnny” to his countless colleagues and friends – loved the outdoors.
John Craig was a teacher at Thunder Bay’s Hillcrest High School and the coach of the school’s downhill and cross-country ski teams.
Those family outings and ski trips to Banff influenced Susan Craig’s career path. Today, she’s a geoscientist and mining consultant based in the Yukon who spends time in some of Canada’s most rugged landscapes. Read More
Veteran coach brings pedigree of success back to Lakehead
Lakehead Athletics announced today that the wrestling program is moving forward with Francis Clayton as head coach.
"Our wrestling program is in capable hands with Francis Clayton at the helm," says Director of Athletics Tom Warden. "His track record of success stands above the rest, and we're glad to hire back one of the greats of CIS wrestling coaches." Read More
Student wins prestigious Lakehead Orillia award
James Newlands of Ramara is about to graduate from Lakehead University’s Honours Bachelor of Commerce program and just received a huge boost to support his further education and career goals.
Newlands, a graduate of Patrick Fogarty Secondary School, is the recipient of Lakehead University’s President’s Golf Tournament Business Award – a $6,900 award that is presented annually to a fourth year student from Simcoe County enrolled in Lakehead Orillia’s business program. Read More
