Spring 2015 Kent ISD MTSS Update
Kent ISD is committed to providing a continuum of supports for local districts as they implement an integrated academic and behavioral Multi-Tier System of Supports (MTSS) framework. Our team works to develop local leadership teams who facilitate and support quality systems reviews resulting in sustainable changes that increase achievement for ALL students.
MTSS Accomplishments
  • Following the team's presentation to the board in December, Board Secretary Andrea Haidle wrote a letter to the legislature in support of MTSS and adequate funding for effective teaching.
  • All MTSS team members recently became administrators of the National Implementation Research Network's District Capacity Assessment
  • Julie Nixon, the Caledonia Community School's MTSS Coordinator, was invited and presented on Data Coordination at MiBLSi's State Conference in March.

What's Next?

  • Eight secondary schools and eight elementary schools from Caledonia, Godwin Heights, Kentwood, Lowell and Thornapple Kellogg will complete training in Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports in May.
  • Grandville Public Schools chose to focus on creating a comprehensive reading system throughout their elementary buildings and will begin installing district supports in June.
  • All four Kent ISD School Improvement Consultants will become trainers of Anita Archer's Explicit Instruction in June.

MTSS in the News

Discussions about MTSS are happening at both the State and Federal levels. In Michigan, MTSS has been included in recent budget considerations. Also look for MTSS to be included in the re-authorization of ESEA.
