Fall 2015 Kent ISD MTSS Update
Kent ISD is committed to providing a continuum of supports for local districts as they implement an integrated academic and behavioral Multi-Tier System of Supports (MTSS) framework. Our team works to develop local leadership teams who facilitate and support quality systems reviews resulting in sustainable changes that increase achievement for ALL students.

Focus on Improving Outcomes

Data reviews are conducted three times each year at all levels of the system: school, district and ISD. In order to strengthen system supports and improve student outcomes, these reviews focus on multiple types of data:
  • Reach data
  • Capacity data
  • Program quality/fidelity data
  • Student outcomes
The MTSS team facilitated 3 days of data review for a total of 26 buildings representing 4 districts. The work was integrated into each building's School Improvement Plan and feedback was overwhelmingly positive.

MTSS Accomplishments
  • The Kent ISD MTSS Team hosted a Strengthening K-3 Reading Training attended by 143 teachers and administrators.  A follow-up skill strengthening session will be held on November 23.
  • Kent ISD's Data Services Team is working to gather data from participating secondary schools on attendance, behavior, and course proficiency in order to produce an Early Warning Systems report for dropout prevention in OurSchoolData.  Early Warning Systems for dropout prevention is a universal screener used at the secondary level.
  • Kent ISD STEM consultants attended professional development on Secondary Content Area Literacy along with members of the MTSS team and plan to incorporate learned strategies in their work with districts.
  • Eighteen buildings successfully kicked off school-wide positive behavior supports for the first time this fall - 15 within the MTSS district project and 3 others. Many principals reported it resulted in the best start to a school year they had experienced.

MTSS at the State

In the new School Aid Budget, funding from Section 31a as well as the new Section 35, is tied to the implementation of a Multi-Tier System of Supports and the use of research-based instruction and diagnostic assessments approved by the Michigan Department of Education. Approved assessments have been identified and reimbursement is available to districts.  See the requirements and list here.
