Celebrating 10 Years of Coastal Monitoring in the South West

April marks the beginning of the South West Regional Coastal Monitoring Programme and the Plymouth Coastal Observatory's 10th anniversary year!

To mark the occasion and the beginning of the third phase of the Programme we will be holding an event where we will be celebrating our achievements over the past decade and looking forward to another five years of high quality coastal monitoring along the South West coast.

COAST South West 2016 is open to the Programme's partners and supporters; there are very few places left a the event so book soon to avoid disappointment.

For more information please click on the image below. We look forward to seeing you there!
As we begin our third phase of monitoring we'd like to extend a big thank you to all our Programme Partners for their support over the last 10 years. Our Programme couldn't exist without the support of the local authorities, the Environment Agency and our countless other partners in the South West.
Changes to the PCO Team

Mark Wiggins left PCO in Januay;  we wish him all the best in his future career.

Mark has been replaced by Cristina Corti who will be our representative for North Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly and Matthew Vann, who will be our representative for South Cornwall and Mounts Bay.

Along with Emerald and Josie, our new recruits take the PCO Team to four members for the very first time!
Habitat Mapping

We've just completed our second round of habitat mapping for the whole South West coast.

The data, which is based on aerial photography interpretation, is available on request from PCO.

Whilst out and about carrying out the ground truth surveys for the data, our contractors came across a number of invasive species. A report on their findings will be available from our website soon.
Programme Feedback

We are always interested in hearing your views and feedback on the Programme, but it is now especially important to us as we move into Phase III.

Please spare a few minutes to fill out our survey so we can continue to deliver a relevant and cost-effective Programme.

News from the PCO across the South West
South Devon & Dorset
All our spring interim topographic surveys have successfully been completed, along with several post-storm surveys carried out since January 2016. The majority of the surveys have been delivered, quality checked and uploaded to the website. The remaining surveys will be uploaded to the website in due course.
Cornwall & Isles of Scilly
We commissioned a combined airborne bathymetric and topographic survey of the Isles of Scilly last year. The results give seamless information about the topography of the Islands and the surrounding seabed. We also captured 5cm resolution aerial photography of the Islands. The data has been sent for upload to our website, where it will be freely available to download.
North Devon, Somerset &
the Severn Estuary
Our Minehead wave buoy came adrift over Easter and became beached at St. Audries Bay. After a difficult recovery the buoy was reported to be in good condition. A replacement will be deployed as soon as conditions allow. We'd like to thank Milford Haven Coastguard for their help in recovering the buoy.

Storm conditions over the winter necessitated carrying out post-storm surveys at the following sites:
  • Chesil
  • Slapton
  • Seaton, Devon
  • Sidmouth
  • Exmouth
  • Teignmouth
  • Dawlish Warren
