NJ Explorer Series

New York sports teams, the Yankees, and Giants trained at the Jersey Shore during World War II. According to the Asbury Park Press, on March 14, 1943, the Yankees arrived by train to Asbury Park and conducted spring training at Asbury Park High School on a newly constructed field. On the same day, the New York Giants' train arrived in Lakewood with a field constructed by the team at the old John D. Rockefeller estate, which had become Ocean County Park in 1940, to serve as their home for the next three years.

We all love the Jersey Shore, but sometimes in the summer the beaches are inundated with tourists who come to the area for all the wrong reasons.

If you want to avoid the out-of-towners who don't treat the Shore like their own, then check out these local spots.

Some may surprise you.

When James and Stef Adinaro first looked into purchasing an RV in 2010, they were hesitant. At 42 and 39, they felt they were too young to purchase a recreational vehicle.

Five years and one RV later, the Adinaros are hoping to upgrade, having embraced the road-tripping "RV lifestyle."

If you're one of the millions of Americans planning to hit the road for a summer trip, be prepared: RVs are ruling the road.

The retro-glam RVs, which run from $42,000 to $151,000, have found new life among an expanded clientele, mainly baby boomers. And smaller, cheaper, mini-trailers, like 1930s-style "teardrop" designs, have also resurfaced as appealing options for road-trippers of a certain sensibility.

Experts New Trends on Camping Technology and Conservation

Ain’t progress grand? Our phones rarely keep us tethered to the wall anymore. Thanks to email, our messages are as fast as lightning and don’t require a stamp. With MP3 players, we don’t have to wait for the radio disc jockey to play our favorite tune.

With so many changes in our everyday lives, it only makes sense that other activities we’re used to — like camping — would evolve with the times, too.
