A peaceful sunrise at the fall senior retreat in Western MD last weekend.

Dear Latin families,

I am very pleased to share some exciting news: we have identified a location for our second campus. Even before this is approved by our authorizer, the DC Public Charter School Board (PCSB), we want to share the good news with you.

We have signed a lease for a school building in Ward 5 at 711 Edgewood Street NE.  This will be the home of our new campus beginning in July 2022 with grades 5 and 6. The building is near both Catholic University and Trinity University and is on the same block as two DC Prep campuses and Capital Village PCS. The facility is already set for school use, an obvious advantage, used in the recent past as a school for students with special needs and as swing space for another charter school. The building is not large enough to be our permanent home, so we know that we will continue to scour the real estate listing for a long-term location for the second campus.

In the meantime, this is great news: we are excited to begin our outreach about this second Washington Latin campus this fall, even before the MySchoolDC lottery opens in December. We will engage the Latin community, DC officials and other influencers, our future Ward 5 neighbors, and prospective families across the city. We have started that process this week by reaching out to Councilmember McDuffie’s office and connecting with other school leaders in the neighborhood. We hope to speak with the ANC commissioner and civic association leaders in the next few weeks. We will also submit a formal request for approval of this site from PCSB, which we aim to submit this month so that the Board can vote on it as soon as possible. And we will launch our recruitment/enrollment season even while this approval is pending.

I hope you will be on the lookout for more information about this second campus, including ways you can engage with our outreach efforts. We need your support both in the PCSB approval process and especially in sharing your experiences as Latin parents. We are working on a new recruitment plan to ensure that both the original and new campuses are known as great options to families across DC. I hope you will consider helping us with this effort, whether as a neighborhood volunteer, joining us at a community event, or talking about your experiences and answering questions on a Zoom call. Be on the lookout for some specific ways you can support our outreach efforts to families, or email us if you are interested in volunteering.

We also invite you to suggest names for the new campus. We will have a committee that will consider names and make a decision within the next three weeks. We hope parents, faculty, and students will contribute their ideas. Feel free to use the same email address.

I welcome your questions about this new site and our expansion plans. Please feel free to reach out to me directly, anytime.

Valete!

JOIN THE PRIDE!

Latin Pride is short, sweet, and important. The campaign runs for an intensive couple of weeks each fall with a goal to raise $200,000. These family donations help keep our classes small, offer extracurricular opportunities to all students, and connect our community with social events. This year's Latin Pride campaign more important than ever, as we continue to face the effects of the pandemic and the costs of recovery.

Volunteers Needed!

For all the changes we have experienced, this campaign is still all about parents encouraging each other to support our school.

Can you help? We need a couple of parents per advisory (especially in Middle School) to contact families. We will train and support you, so this an enjoyable experience - a great way to connect with fellow parents! Please let us know if you can help - even if just to take on a short list (5 families). We welcome your involvement, whatever form that might take! You can contact any of the three of us with questions or to volunteer - use the button below or email any of us individually.
