Facility Review Advisory Board to hold Open House

In 2014, the Cape Girardeau County Commission formed a citizens advisory board to review three options as proposed by Treanor Architects.  The Advisory Board has reviewed the options as presented by the architect, and participated in detailed tours of County owned buildings.  The Advisory Board will conduct two open houses to solicit public input prior to their final recommendation to the Cape Girardeau County Commission, January 26, 2015.

The County Commission embarked on this process in 2013 to formulate a long term facility plan to provide a safe, and efficient space for conducting criminal and civil court in Cape Girardeau County.

The first open house will be held at the Osage Center in Cape Girardeau, Thursday, January 8, 2015, 5:00pm - 7:00pm.  The second open house opportunity will be located at the Riverside Regional Library in Jackson, Thursday January 22, 2015, 5:00pm - 6:30pm.  The meetings will be conducted in an informal manner with Advisory Board members, County Commissioners, and other local officials present to answer inquiries from the citizens.

Park Shelter Fee Increase for 2015

The fee for shelter reservations will increase beginning in January 2015 according to Bryan Sander, Park Superintendent.  An online reservation system and fee schedule was implemented in 2013 to provide better access and service for the county residents.  The reservation fees are collected to offset the cost of cleaning, maintenance, and repair of 14 shelters in North, South, and Klaus Park.  "County residents have come to expect quality shelters and grounds which make the fees necessary to fund that budget line item," according to Bryan Sander.  Unlike the City of Cape Girardeau and City of Jackson, Cape Girardeau County does not have a dedicated tax for park upkeep and improvements.

Improvements for 2015 include the completion of Shelter 8 in North Park (located adjacent to Melaina's Playground and the replacement of Shelter 22 in South Park.  Shelter 8 construction was made possible due to generous funding support from the Cape Girardeau Evening Optimist Club.

The County Park Systems averages nearly 800 shelter reservations each year.  This does not include shelters that are available on a "first come" basis.  Park shelter reservations are made online by visiting
