President's Note

After a pandemic-based hiatus in 2020, the AFP Florida conference, Planet Philanthropy, was in person, and 333 participants flooded into Orlando from June 6 to 8. The Collier-Lee Chapter was well-represented, and attendees came away with pages of great ideas, hopeful hearts, and the joy of seeing one another once again.

Here are some of the things that impressed me most.
  • Fundraising is the “Impact Profession” (a phrase from AFP Global CEO Mike Geiger)
  • Several folks from the Collier-Lee Chapter were present, including Susan McManus and seven staff members of Champions for Learning! Plus…
  • I attended workshop led by Guadalupe Center’s Dawn Montecalvo and Kelly Krupp, along with Kerry Bartlett of Carter Philanthropy, “Capital Campaigns: Surviving and Thriving During a Pandemic.” They told the story of their “2020 & Beyond” campaign for $20+ million that succeeded in spite of the pandemic.
  • The buzz from the margins: In many chapters and across the organization, there was an upheaval in membership. Many chapters, including ours, saw the loss of many long-time members, hopefully just temporarily. At the same time, there was a much larger-than-usual influx of new members. Many of these new members are new to the profession and have chosen philanthropy as their career.

  • Stats worth noting, according to AFP’s Fundraising Effectiveness Project:
    • Average fundraising growth annually: 2.2%
    • Average donor retention rate is 45% per year
    • 80,000 fundraising professionals are expected to retire or otherwise leave the profession for every year in the next 10 years. Therefore, mentoring, leadership development, education and credentialing are even more important.
    • Yet only 1 in 5 nonprofits has a succession plan in place (80% do not!)
    • 70% of those in the profession are female, but only 50% of the top executives in their organization are female, and only 20% are people of color
    • Average tenure in the profession is about 16 months for newcomers

  • Websites worth visiting:
  • Books worth reading:
    • Good to Great, and Good to Great and the Social Sectors, Jim Collins
    • The Truth About What Nonprofit Boards Want, June Bradham
    • Stories That Stick, Kindra Hall
    • Marketing Rebellion: The Most Human Company Wins, Mark Schaefer
    • Start With Why, Simon Sinek

  • AFP Global notes
    • Sarah Landman of Insightful Philanthropy Services at NewsBank will speak at ICON Virtual, June 28-30
    • ICON 2022 will take place the first week of May in Las Vegas, NV.
    • AFP LEAD will be Oct. 18-21 in Indianapolis, IN, in conjunction with the Indiana University Lilly School of Philanthropy, and will include a one-day session for seasoned leaders.
    • Planet Philanthropy 2022 will be in St. Petersburg in early June. Much closer for all of us in the Collier-Lee Chapter!

CFRE Training

If you’re thinking of sitting for the CFRE (“Certified Fundraising Executive”) exam, here’s a great opportunity to prepare. A two-day CFRE Training class is scheduled for Aug. 20-21 at the United Way of Collier and the Keys.

The CFRE credential demonstrates your professional achievement and commitment to the fundraising profession.  The exam tests mastery of core knowledge areas and skills.
