Metropolis Magazine Japan
Metropolis is celebrating its 25th anniversary and would like to take the opportunity to thank both Japan’s domestic and international media/communities for supporting the magazine.
In 1994, a four-page sheet named Tokyo Classified was first published, consisting of classified advertisements in English sourced from shop notice boards. It was clear that demand for English language media in Tokyo outgrew the scale of Tokyo Classified and, in 2001, was rebranded as Metropolis. In 2019, Metropolis is still going strong, with a beautifully designed 40-44 page monthly magazine, jam-packed with stories relevant to Japan’s growing international community. The past decade has also seen our website metropolisjapan.com expand exponentially.
The present day is not an easy time to be in print media but Metropolis has survived and thrived thanks mostly to the strength of the community surrounding the magazine. Our high points of 2018 included our acclaimed October issue which focused on the aftermath of the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami. In addition, we expanded our circulation to 40,000 with over 10,000 distribution points.
We have big plans for the near future, including reviving our events and ticketing platforms and further expanding our online presence, as well as maintaining the high editorial standards displayed in our print issue. Thank you to our readers, advertisers, sponsors and media partners for your continuing support of Metropolis. Please feel free to reach out for collaborations or if you would like to feature Metropolis in your media outlet.
