CalMutuals Announces Official Formation of CalMutuals Joint Powers Insurance Authority to Help Small Water Systems
We are excited to announce the official formation of the CalMutuals-Joint Powers Insurance Authority (JPIA) in the new year.
The CalMutuals JPIA is the first of its kind in the nation to provide insurance and technical assistance to help small community water systems throughout California fix their aging pipes and comply with water quality regulations.
The CalMutuals JPIA, based in Fullerton, CA, expects to provide business liability insurance to small community water systems by February 2016, and workers’ compensation insurance in March 2016.
The formation of the CalMutuals JPIA is possible, thanks to Governor Jerry Brown who signed Assembly Bill 656 into law in September 2015. The bill, authored by Assemblymember Cristina Garcia (D-Bell Gardens), and co-sponsored by Assemblymember Luis Alejo (D-Salinas), is a significant step in helping small community water systems statewide.
Revenues from membership-based insurance will yield funds to develop technical assistance programs for mutual water companies that have found it challenging to keep up with aging pipelines and increasingly tough water quality regulations.
To further this mission, we are happy to announce the following newly-elected slate of officers to serve on the CalMutuals-JPIA Board of Directors:
Jim Byerrum, President
Dave Michalko, Vice President
Ken Bradbury, Secretary
Ken Deck, Treasurer
Alteris Insurance Services Inc. will serve as the CalMutuals-JPIA Insurance Administrator. Adán Ortega has been appointed Interim Executive Director.
We will keep you posted on developments concerning the CalMutuals-JPIA in the coming weeks. In the meantime, should you have any questions about the CalMutuals-JPIA, please contact Adán Ortega, Interim Executive Director, at (714) 449-3397 (office), (714) 600-4683 (cell), or via email at email@example.com.
We encourage you to join the CalMutuals-JPIA and look forward to working with you more in 2016!
