A Real Oak Tree

A real oak tree?!  I exclaimed! With real acorns?!  It seemed too good to be true. But it was true indeed.

As I walked around the campus of the Adventist University in Chillan, Chile, more and more things put smiles on my face, reminding me of home: Wild blackberries ripened along fences, warm summer sun dried the water drops tossed by the sprinklers, lush green grass grew clean without deposits from the neighborhood dogs. Vineyards, orchards and berry farms lined the country roads. Oh it was sweet! Even the 48 hours of traveling with two under two was worth it!

All too soon we were returning to our Bolivian home in the city. Don’t get me wrong; God has placed us in about the best place we could hope to be in a city of a million people. We live about a 10 minute walk from the edge of the city and have a huge national park literally out our back door – a wonderful change from our place in La Paz, where it took us a minimum of an hour by vehicle to get out of the city in any direction. We currently have the best landlords and hesitate to move because they are so nice. Nevertheless, city life includes the less desirables like party music blaring on weekends, dogs barking incessantly, traffic all day and street lights all night. Since coming to Bolivia four years ago, we’ve been looking for a place to base outside of the city. We’ve seen a lot of Bolivia simply exploring with this objective, yet have never found a place that would work. That is, until this last week.
Bussing to Chile!
“You’ve gotta see pictures,” DJ said excitedly. “There are so many good options around the lakes, I’m sure we could find something! Wouldn’t you love to wake up and look across the valley at a lake every morning?”
The "Lake District"
The pictures were spectacular and I began dreaming of a little house in the country where my growing girls could play outside and where we’d live the life we’ve always wanted. My thoughts were interrupted by a song floating through my mind…

“This world is not my home, I’m just a passin’ through… I can’t feel at home in this world anymore.”
Sure, there are beautiful places all over the world and I do hope that someday soon we can live in the country. But no matter where life may take us, the beautiful Chilean countryside, the lake district just over the mountains, or even “home” in the States, the place will never completely satisfy. Why? Because it was never meant to - we were created for something more, something better, our forever home in heaven.
I’m grateful for the opportunity we had to attend the OCI conference in Chile mostly because the trip gave me perspective. It helped me see outside of my Bolivia bubble, outside of the temporary, day-to-day whirlpool I often get sucked into. It’s so important to know where we’re going, to keep the goal in sight. My goal is that forever home in heaven and I pray yours will be too. And who knows, maybe a real oak tree is already growing in my heaven home :).
