The Piano

What is the newest invention of the following musical instruments: the trumpet, the pipe organ, the violin, or the piano? The trumpet has been around since at least 1,500 B.C., the pipe organ since 200 B.C., the violin since 1556 A.D., and the piano since 1700 A.D. The piano which is the newest invention is one of the most difficult musical instruments to master. Perhaps that is why we enjoy listening to and singing along with it at concerts or in church.
Bartolomeo Cristofori started to experiment with the harpsichord, the predecessor to the piano,  to vary the volume of the sound around 1700 A.D. His instrument was almost identical to the harpsichord with metal strings struck by small hammers. The harder the musician hit the key the louder the sound. In Italian they called this sound “piano forte” or soft, loud. It took a long time to be accepted. Both Bach and Mozart did not like it.  It took a concert by Franz Liszt, which caused the audience to weep with joy, to bring acceptance of the piano.
The piano did not become popular until 1823 when Jonas Chickering began manufacturing the first pianos in America. By 1883, the piano became the home entertainment center of its day. Today we sit and listen to our children practice their lessons for hours. After several years of lessons, we soon notice that the pieces become so much more difficult and more pleasing to the ear.
For a number of years now, Bethany has offered piano lessons during the day.  It is our hope and prayer that a number of our students go on to learn not only to play the piano well, but also, try their hand at learning to play the organ. A foundation of our worship service is the music played on the piano and organ. Encourage your child in playing the instrument.  Who knows maybe he or she will lead our worship service on the keyboard?

Through our school’s support, we have helped LLS make break-through advancements in research, patient services, and advocacy efforts directly in our community.  Have your student use these super-cool shields to send to those that helped support their Hero Squad program to say thank you for being part of our school squad!

If your student earned additional Hero Gear, it will arrive soon.  Families, again thank you for joining our Hero Squad and supporting LLS!
