Dealing with Stress

Did you know that stress is a concern for young people as well as adults? With children involved in more and more activities, they are experiencing signs of stress more than ever before. The top stressors are related to school like worries about grades, upcoming tests, difficult projects, and certain challenging classmates. Children also worry about family members’ health, or the way members of the family are getting along.
So what are signs of stress?  In early school-age children, signs of stress are: 1) refusal to or fear of going to school, 2) unexplained stomach aches and headaches, 3) regression to earlier habits like thumb-sucking, and 4) nightmares.  Later elementary school children will show signs such as: 1) misbehavior in the classroom or at home, 2) withdrawal from normal child activities, 3) increased anger and aggressiveness, 4) over-compliance, or 5) fear of making mistakes.  Finally, signs of stress in teens are: 1) change of sleep habits, 2) chronic irritability, 3) fear of trying new things, 4) increased sensitivity to complaints, 5) night terrors, and 6) perfectionism.
What can parents do to help their children when they begin showing signs of stress? First, let them know that you are listening to their complaints. Find out what are some things they are afraid of. Remind them that Jesus is with them wherever they go, and he is watching over them. Talk with them about ways to handle stress.  Reassure them that nothing is wrong with them and that all people have different stressors that make them fearful.  Exercise with them by going for walks or doing stretches in the house. Teach them to be mindful of the moment where everything is safe and secure. Do not worry about the future. Cast their anxieties on Jesus and let him handle them. Help them to think about positive things.  You can have them hang out with their pets if you have one. Above all, tell them to pray and that you are standing with them every step of the way.
