The Ability to Listen

Have you ever heard of the axiom, “God gave us two ears and one mouth for a reason? We should spend twice as much time listening as talking.” How often have you found that you needed to improve on listening to your own child?
As parents and teachers, we can spend quality time in our children’s world by listening - focusing on what they are saying and on his or her body language. While speaking, continue to make eye contact with your child. It lets them know how intently you desire to know what is on their mind. If your child seems hesitant to share, reassure them that everything will be ok. You will help them deal with what is on their mind. Smiling and nodding when appropriate will help them feel at ease. Finally, paraphrasing what they said will help the child make sure you are understanding exactly what they want to convey to you.
Your children are near and dear to you. You want them to feel at ease when they come to you with questions. At the same time, they also need to learn patience. There are times when they need to let you alone to finish a task. A kindly spoken, “I will be with you in a minute,” should be enough to let them know that you are not to be bothered immediately. However, after a minute or two, then make sure that you address your child’s concerns. They will appreciate your patience and understanding, and soon they will become better listeners themselves.

Absences

When a child misses school for any reason, we have to mark them absent even if they go online. The only exceptions to this are 1) you have chosen online learning for the quarter, or 2) you have been asked by your physician to quarantine for a period of time. These exceptions are marked absent only when they do not go online.

KLA Fall Sports Announcement

Good afternoon Wolves:
I hope this is a sign of getting back to some kind of normal, but I won’t hold my breath.  We are going to try and have a little cross-country season. We are planning to enter two meets this year. I will inform you if we find any other cross-country meets that we might be able to enter.
WLS Invitational – Sept 18th at 4pm at Good Hope Church
SLHS Invitational – Sept 26th at 10:30am at Shoreland

We will be doing a couple of practices this week at the Biergarten at Pets Park. Practices will start at 6pm on Tuesday and Wednesday.  Practice is encouraged but not mandatory.
I will hand out uniforms on Tuesday to everyone competing. Please contact either athletic director or any of the advisory board members if you have any questions.
Information on Volleyball and Soccer will be coming soon. We might throw a season together in October. If it doesn’t work we will be playing in the spring with all Racine schools and Christian Life.
Go Wolves!

Make-up Day

Because we canceled the first week of school due to the civil unrest, we lost 5 snow days out of the 5 ½ days we had scheduled into the calendar. To get more snow days (unforeseen closings) back into our schedule, the Board of Education voted to add Monday, September 28th, to our teaching calendar. Please mark this day on your calendar as a school day. The Board of Education will consider adding one or two more half-days to our schedule later this month.

Parking Lot

We appreciate your patience in the Parking Lot, arrivals and dismissals seem to be going rather smoothly. Until we learn the names of all the parents and grandparents who are picking up the children, we will come and ask who you are so that we call the correct children to leave the building.
One thing we ask in the morning is that you pull up to the cone and then let your child out. After your child is out of the car, please pull ahead and wait for your child to signal that they are good to go. We will make them come out of the doorway and signal around the door that they are good to go.
Another thing to remember is that all drivers are to leave the parking lot on the 75th street exit. This makes sure that we have a smooth traffic flow. 22nd Avenue should be completed soon and it will be easier to get on 75th street. The only exception to this rule is when the roof of your vehicle is too high and would hit the roof of the tunnel. Thank you for your cooperation!

Chapel

Each child was given a box of envelopes. Our first quarter offerings are going for a special 100th Anniversary gift to the school.

Free Cup of Coffee

Reach Ministries will be serving coffee in the parking lot during drop-off Monday, September 28, starting at 7:30 AM. Come say hi to Pastor Russ Scoggins and Reach team members and grab a cup to go!

Drop Boxes

We have two new drop boxes near the office entrance. The one in blue is for dropping off hot lunch orders. The other in white is for dropping off office forms or payments.

Achievement Testing

We will give the fall MAP tests during the next two weeks. Please make sure your child gets plenty of sleep and gets a healthy breakfast to start the day. We want our children to try their best and realize that these tests are a measure of where they are currently in knowledge and skills. They are not expected to get every answer correct.

Powerschool Usernames and Passwords

A sheet was sent home today telling parents how to create an account in Power School.  Please follow the instructions to create your own unique user name and password. This app will help you see how your child is doing academically.

100th Anniversary

Please note the change of date for the 100th Anniversary celebration. Due to concerns about the large gathering for the 100th Anniversary we are moving the date from November 8, 2020, to March 21, 2021. We have a number of people involved in planning the celebration. If you would like to help, please contact the office or one of the committee members - Pastor Pagel, Miss Sternhagen, Miss Petermann, Mr. Steve Dankert, or myself.
