Create a Positive Homework Environment
Do you have a child who hates to do homework? If you do, it is important not to get into a power struggle over the issue. A power struggle will only create stress in the household and rarely gets you what you want. So what can you do to help your child turn in homework on time?
Setting up the right type of environment is key. First of all, make sure there are no distractions. Turn off all electronics. Areas of the brain for memory and focus are used when listening to music. However, there is certain instrumental music that would qualify as white noise.
Secondly, giving your child some free time to burn off energy before beginning homework relaxes the brain and helps them start fresh. In addition, a healthy snack will remove hunger pains after a long day in school.
Thirdly, having a comfortable table and chair encourages good posture while working. In addition, lighting that mimics natural sunlight is better than bright glaring lights.
Finally, during homework time, it is wise to block any games, social media, or other distractions from the internet. Having a supply of paper, pens, markers, rulers, and the like is important to keep your child from leaving the work area. In addition, some parents use timers to set a limit of work time that is to be followed by a short break. This is repeated until the homework is done.
Children who learn to complete their homework in a timely fashion are the ones who learn responsibility. The responsibility of completing tasks will prove beneficial when they enter the work world.
