What Is Love?

Valentine’s Day is Friday, February 14. What began as a day in 496 to honor the Roman martyr Valentine, has now become a day celebrating romantic and platonic love to the tune of $27.5 billion dollars. Nearly $6 billion will be spent on jewelry for the romantic someone while children will spend nearly $1 billion on candy for their classmates.
God does tell us to love our neighbor as ourselves. It is part of the Golden rule. This type of love for our fellow man is sometimes called brotherly love. Another type of love is the love a husband has for his wife or a wife for her husband.
The highest kind of love is ‘agape’ love or the love God has for us. “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends” (John 15:13). Jesus came to earth as a child in the manger at Bethlehem. He spent three years of his ministry preaching, teaching, and healing people. But he loved us so much that he took care of our greatest need, the need to be reconciled to God. Through his suffering, death, and resurrection, Christ paid for our sins and made us part of God’s family. He did this so that we will live with him forever! Can we comprehend how much Jesus loves us?
Enjoy Valentine’s Day this Friday. Do something special for those who mean the most to you. However, do not forget that the greatest love is the love God has for you and me. May we show our love for God by faithfully hearing and learning his word, and may we love our neighbors as we love ourselves.
