The Light Has Come

In our Advent Series this year, the children will be presenting the Christmas service in three parts. The second part of our Advent series is next Wednesday, December 9, and will be presented by the children in grades 3-6. The theme of the second part is the Light of the World: The Light Prophesied. Jesus’ coming to earth was prophesied throughout the Old Testament from Moses to Micah.
When God’s people, Israel, would begin to turn away, he sent prophets to remind them of his promises and comfort them. Moses wrote in Exodus that God would give them the land of Canaan. God promised it, and he carried it out through Joshua 40 years later. Seven hundred years before Jesus’ birth, Isaiah wrote, “Therefore, the Lord himself will give you a sign: the virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.” He also prophesied that the Messiah, Jesus, is God coming to live with us. He was to be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace. Micah even prophesied that the Light of the World was to be born in Bethlehem.
For thousands of years, the people of Israel looked forward to the coming Messiah, the Savior. They knew what to look for, a descendant of King David, born of a virgin, in the town of Bethlehem. So you can imagine the surprise and excitement created in the heart of a young Jewish virgin named Mary when she was told by the angel Gabriel that she was chosen by God to conceive and give birth to the Savior. Because her fiancé Joseph was ready to divorce her privately, God appeared to Joseph in a dream to tell him that he was sending his Son to bring light to the sin-darkened world. The baby Mary was carrying was none other than the promised Messiah conceived by the Holy Spirit. Joseph believed and took Mary to be his wife. The Light of the World would soon be here.

Final Note for 7th & 8th Grade Advent Service

The 7th and 8th grade Advent service is this Wednesday, December 2nd at 3:30. Doors will open at 3:00 pm. Please be aware that we are also dismissing students for pickup at that time as normal, so please navigate carefully in the parking lot!  There is a four person limit per student. At this time, we are planning on recording and sending out a special Broadcaster with the video link on Wednesday.

Students please bring either a change of clothes or wear your nice church clothes to school - no clothing with logos, rips, or tears. Please wear dark pants/bottoms and make sure your clothes are clean!

Christmas Service for Advent

During the three weeks of Advent, the children will be proclaiming God’s Word through recitation and song. The students in grades 7-8 will be first on Wednesday, December 2 at 3:30 PM. The service theme is “The Light Has Come: The Light Promised.”  On December 9 grades 3-6 will be presenting “The Light Has Come: The Light Prophesied.” The final service, December 16 will be done by grades K-2, “The Light Has Come: The Light with Us.” In order to properly prepare for the service, we need to know if your child is not participating. If you decide not to have them participate, please send an email to the teacher or to Please note there is a limit of 4 people per family for each service. That is the only way we can safely distance ourselves. Thank you for cooperating with this. We are unable to live stream the service so you can watch at home. But, we will be videotaping the service and making it available online.

Student Players for Christmas Program

Students who are playing for pre-service will meet Mrs. Hagedorn to walk over to church at 3:15. All other students will stay in their classroom until 3:20.

We would welcome adult helpers and RSVPs to Non-perishable food items are also being accepted at the event, which will be donated to the local food bank.

Call Received

Dear Members of Bethany:

This past Sunday, November 15, I received a divine call to teach third and fourth grade at Abiding Peace Academy in Simpsonville, South Carolina.  Over the next few weeks I will be prayerfully considering the two calls that God has now given me - my call to serve Bethany and my call to serve Abiding Peace. I humbly ask for your prayers as I deliberate. Please feel free to reach out and share your thoughts with me on how you think my gifts and abilities may be useful at either ministry. Thank you for keeping me and all the called workers here at Bethany in your thoughts and prayers.

In Christ,
Lena Petermann

Bethany Youth Christmas Service - A Change!

Because of the current health concerns in our community, we will not be having a whole-school Christmas Service on Friday, December 18 (that will be a full day of regular school). Instead, the students have been divided into 3 groups and will each present an Advent Service on a Wednesday in December. The groups and dates will be as follows:

  • December 2 @ 3:30 pm - 7th and 8th grade
  • December 9 @ 3:30 pm - 3rd - 6th grade
  • December 16 @ 3:30 pm - K - 2nd grade

Each Advent Service will be a "mini" Christmas service. At this time, there is no limit on the number of family members per student, but that is subject to change. We will also be recording each service and publishing it on the internet for family and friends to watch afterwards if they are unable to attend.

Winter Gear

With winter and cold weather present please remember to send hat, ear muffs, scarves, mittens, and gloves to school with your child/ren. When it starts to snow please remember that they will also need winter boots and snow pants. We try to get the children outside as much as we possibly can. Thank you.
