Fear: How to Get Rid of It

The news constantly feeds it. Every new update seems to heighten the fear in many citizens of the United States and around the world. The “Corona Virus” COVID-19 is spreading. The number of cases will grow every day during the peak of the flu season. In the United States, as of today on the CDC website, there are 647 confirmed cases and 25 deaths. Did you know that over 20 million Americans have had influenza A this year and over 10,000 deaths have occurred as a result of the virus.
So if you are fearful about getting the coronavirus, what can you do to get rid of it. First we need to remember what God tells us, “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand” (Isaiah 41:10). Our loving heavenly father has everything under control. He took care of our biggest problem - sin - through his Son’s suffering and death on the cross. Through faith, we are his dear redeemed children. He will protect us from harm and danger. He uses all things - even illnesses for our good. He is the one who heals our diseases. He will uphold us in good times and bad times with his righteous right hand. Remembering that our Almighty God is watching over us removes fear from our hearts. So go to his word for calmness and strength when you are fearful.
The second thing you can do to avoid viruses is to get a flu shot if you are exposed to large groups of people every day, work in the health care industry, or have a compromised immune system. Also, use universal precautions like 1) wash your hands often- 20 seconds with soap and water, 2) cover your mouth when you cough or use your elbow, stay 6 feet away from someone who may be sick when talking to them, 4) avoid putting your hands in your eyes, nose, or mouth, and 5) disinfect commonly touched areas in your house or place of business.
Spring break is next week. Do not be afraid to travel or do things with the family. Use wisdom when going out and practice universal precautions. May God give you good health and take away all your fears.
