Beating Procrastination

Research shows that 95% of all people dilly-dally to some degree. The authority behind this statement is Dr. Piers Steel, the author of The Procrastination Equation.
Dr. Steel, a human resources professor at the University of Calgary’s Haskayne School of Business, says perfectionism is not at the root of procrastination. Perfectionists actually procrastinate less but worry more about it.
What then is a procrastinator? A person who believes it would be better to start working on a given task immediately but still does not do it. Procrastinators evade the task because it is unpleasant. Procrastinators easily get distracted by other things around them and fail to work on a task with perseverance. Doing something else that pops into your head, impulsiveness, is still another sign of procrastination. Finally, the feeling of it is not worth it, low motivation because you really do not care if the task is achieved, is perhaps the most serious sign of a procrastinator.
So what can we do if we or our children are procrastinators? With effort and self-discipline, most people can improve. Steel says, “Whether you believe you can or cannot, you are probably right.” As you get better self-control, your expectancy for doing things in a timely manner goes up.
Not only do we need to help our children raise their own expectations, but we also need to remove distractions that will get them off task. Cell phones, music, television, or other things that they tend to play with instead of doing work. Setting time limits to completing a task often helps. May God bless us in teaching our children to do all things to the best of their ability and to God’s glory.

All School Musical

Our musical will be held on Friday, May 8, 2020 at 1 PM and 7 PM in the Frieden’s gym. Tryouts will be held on Monday, January 27 from 3:30 to 6:00 pm. Tryouts for singing/speaking roles are open to all students in grades 3-8. Please see the Bobcat News Bulletin Board for sign up sheets and character descriptions, scripts and scores. Practices will begin in February. Some practices for lead roles may be held during recess times or after school as we get closer to the performance date.

MAP Testing

Between January 21 and February 7, the classrooms will be taking the Measure of Academic Progress (MAP) tests. Make sure that your child gets plenty of rest and a good meal each morning so that they can focus clearly on the tests. Thank you!

100 Day Donuts!

We will be celebrating our 100th day of school on Friday, January 31. (watch for a date change if we have any unplanned days off school) We will be serving donuts from 7:15 - 8:00 am. Families are invited to join us and celebrate! We are also looking for any parents who would be willing to help out with serving or clean up. Please let the office or Mrs. Hagedorn know if you are able to help.

Divine Call Declined

Bethany’s Grade 5-6 teacher, Mr. Marc Meihack, has declined his divine Call to serve at Salem Lutheran School on the northwest side of Milwaukee. He will continue his service at Bethany. We thank the Lord for granting him insight during the deliberation process and pray for his continued work among us. We also pray that Jesus will soon allow Salem to fill their teacher vacancy.

Robitics

Thank you mom’s and dad’s for your support and assistance at the Vex IQ challenge last Saturday at SLHS. Our four teams represented our school quite well. One team finished one spot from going to state and another received an award for showing kindness to teammates and perseverance in reprogramming during the event. Right now we do not have any practices scheduled. It appears that we will give the children two more opportunities to participate in meets. More information will be coming home soon.
